Ukraine wants to join NATO (like the rest of Europe has done) so that Russia can't invade it without the rest of NATO (effectively North America and Europe) being obligated to protect it. Russia doesn't want Ukraine to join NATO because then Russia can't invade it. So Russia decided to invade it while it still can.
