This shit is such a scam. Both in terms of emissions, cost of what it takes to make/buy, transport and how many times you have to use them to offset the aforementioned is much greater than that of the regular old plastic bags. This goes for the reusable thicker plastic ones too since many of them would take longer to degrade than the old bags. Often times people get rid of or stop using the reusable bags before that point is reached since you would have to use them hundreds of times. When the reality is that the corporations that manufacture the shit that's wrapped in plastics, make plastic containers, and large corporations in general pollute in orders of magnitudes greater than the population in general much less an individual does on their own.

Just like the carbon footprint, and some recycling campaigns (most of the plastic and shit out there can't really be recycled and if it is it makes an inferior plastic) along with carbon offsets is nothing by a ploy by these big corporations to shift the blame and responsibilities of the environmental damage they cause to you, the consumer or a way to buy themselves out of taking proper responsibility for their irresponsible practices that end up polluting the environment. Nothing will change unless they are held responsible.

If you wanna use one of these reusable bags, by all means, do it, but also take good care of it so you can use it as much as possible.

Regardless of what you have be it reusable bags or the old plastic ones the best thing you can do is use them until you can't use them any longer/they rip. That does help in the way that it helps decrease demand even if only slightly. Only real way out of this is if these companies are held accountable stop using so much goddamn plastic or find other more degradable materials or if bacteria/organisms that eats this shit are created or a combination of all because even polymers made of shit like starch are a meme too they are just as hard to break down.

Where I live, the major supermarkets transitioned to reusable bags 2 or 3 years ago. They also started selling reusable bags for $1 then. I bought 3 of them and have been using them 2-3 times a week since then and they still look good, I reckon they can serve me for probably 2 more years. The supermarket also has a policy that they replace a damaged bag for a new one for free. Politics and all the virtue signalling or what not aside, it works well for me.

It only becomes a hassle when I forget one, but in 2017 I bought a dozen real-cloth plain-no-logo large canvas bags. Keep a few in the car, couple in my backpack, randomly around the house.
They roll up enough to stick one in my pocket.
Nearly rip proof, heavier loads, far stronger than plastic, paper, or those crappy felted-pressed-recycled-polyfiber bags.
Minor shortcoming; not waterproof. Major benefit; water doesn't damage it.
Annoying shortcoming; so flexible they don't stand or stay open on their own. Benefit, you can sling, toss, crush, pull, and they hold up well. Also machine washable.
I can't go back to fragile plastic or paper bags, these canvas bags perform great.

I've already been bringing my own cloth tote bags for years now. Even without the obvious factor of being good for the environment, it's still just better in every way. Fit more shit in them. They never break. Looks better. Less trips to the car when unloading because fewer bags. No waste filling up my trash. Keeps cold stuff frozen longer. And you save a little money at stores like aldi because there won't be a bag fee. Feels good being a cloth tote King.

Granted it doesn't help anything. I used the thin grocery bags for trash before and also use produce bags to wrap meat so I'm pretty sure I use more plastic in total than I used to. What's so hard about bringing a few textile bags with you when you go shopping?
1) They don't rip if shit's awkwardly placed in the bag or too heavy
2) You can buy insulated bags for cold/frozen food if you have to make other stops
3) If you don't feel like bagging, ask the cashier to use the bags you brought
4) More comfortable to carry
5) Less shit you gotta throw away when you get home
There's 5 reasons bringing your own bags is better without even mentioning the ecological benefit of having less plastic bags floating around in the world (because of the state of this site I'm assuming you're a /pol/ user who thinks it's some liberal/jewish conspiracy to make your white wives sleep with black men or something).

I doubt those numbers have been updated since selfserve was implemented. 4chan was listing 22 mil. hits/month elsewhere before phonefaggotry was even a thing. I sincerely doubt it's gone down since then. And how the fuck would the staff even know the demographic age/education.

No idea if the tumblr blog still exists, but that's probably still the closest we have to official stats. I think it was chrishateswriting

In my country, it started as 5p per bag, then got more and more expensive until now ALL bags under £5 is now charged an extra 25p, including the re-useable bags. It's bullshit, they don't give a shit about the environment, it's just another thing they can tax to grab as much money as possible.

This happened in my town and got unbanned a week after. People didn't realize how retarded it was until they experienced it then suddenly it was the devil.

That's retarded.
I'm fine with banning plastic bags or at least charging extra for them, I'm tired of seeing them in rivers and the stores always over-use them, they're so fucking weak and shitty you need two of them to hold something moderately heavy, and if that thing has an edge or corner sharper than a spoon it just tears anyway. I've been using the same reusable bags for 5 years without issue and I think it cost me less than $3.

That said, paper bags are fine. The environmental message behind banning paper bags is complete bullshit. Brown paper bags are made from the lowest quality wood pulp, meaning recycled paper/cardboard and the dirty chips from lumber mills which is stuff that has bark or is from burned timber - chips that can't go into white paper. Chipped material is all the stuff left over from lumber milling that otherwise would go to waste. The paper industry stops the waste of timber, it's a good thing.
