wow I literally had the same experience. I remember it was late 2001 because 9/11 had recently and the holidays were coming up, I had rented it from the local movie store, it was in the kids section, and when I got home I was confused because it was all in Japanese and it was probably one of the first times I'd watched something that was subtitled. I remember I was in the basement watching it, all the lights were off and what looked like a fun kids movie suddenly had these terrifying pig humans. it was already a super weird vibe leading up to that, then they transform and Chihiro is scared and freaking out, the dad starts getting beat and falls in front of her and she runs away and so did I. I was fucking terrified, I remember returning it the next day and I didn't watch that movie again until years later.

I've traveled quite a bit to East-Asia and have to say that steamed buns are mostly meh. The dough is too sweet most of the time and the filling is usually not that great either.
