Did you try going to www.youtube.com and searching keywords such as "navy ship cafeteria" or "navy food/diet"? I just watched a video recently of a US naval ship dinner and the crew was served pot roast, potatoes, bread, corn, cookies and other stuff.

Depends on how good your cook is. If they can't figure out basic shit, prepare for raw chicken and general garbage. I served 2 years on a coast guard cutter sailing the west coast of North America and we had amazing food almost every meal because our FS team actually gave a shit.

>> No.18344370

>>18344197
The cooks are the one ordering food so they plan what they want to make ahead of time and set out a menu for the crew. There's usually two different choices per meal, plus sides, salad, soups, sometimes desserts. If you don't like whatever they're serving you can ask for a grilled chicken breast. Most galleys will also leave out snacks and sandwich materials for people who might have missed the meal or just have a weird schedule.

On our ship there was a semi set menu, in that we would have certain things on certain days most of the time, subject to change depending on what was available. Taco Tuesday, Asian Wednesday, Fish Friday, Saturday was just fat fuck fried food and pizza. Ice cream socials once in a while. Then there's midrats for people who have watch at midnight, usually more fried food but sometimes the cooks experiment with recipes and test it out on the midrats crew. Anyone else can eat midrats after the initial watchstanders have eaten

Naval ships are places of pure insanity. You have a bunch of 18 year old dudes who aren't top notch mentally, stuck 24/7 on a floating house with no way out, so people go crazy.

A ship was right off the coast of cali during the start of covid, because of that no one could come on or leave and it was like this for months

someone, some heinous individual or group of individuals, would secretly shit in the hallways of the ship. No one was ever caught, but for months there were random shits in the middle of hallways and some of them were so large they must've been taken by multiple people.

Do not glorify naval ships, it's a barely functioning frat house with kids who would never be accepted into a real frat.

I was on both the USS Truman and USS Eisenhower back in the 2010's. The food isn't awful overall but a hot meal is a hot meal. I never used hot sauce much before deployment, now I use it all the time.

There's always a protein, carb, and veggies at the mid-ship galley. Sometimes it was okay, other times it could be real bad. Sometimes the rice would be both overcooked and undercooked at the same time. The pork adobo was almost always done well due to the amount of Filipino CSs in the kitchens.

I also got to see the Captains personal galley. Pretty sweet set-up compared to the craziness on the third deck

Was on 2 ddgs, food was alright. Better out to sea than when in port usually. Although I was deployed when covid broke out, and the food was abysmal. All ships follow the same menu. You have Asian Monday, taco Tuesday, burger Wednesday, Italian Thursday, pizza and wings Friday, Saturday is usually a toss up, Sunday is holiday routine so there's brunch around 9 and dinner is usually a traditional Sunday meal. If you get steak and lobster on a ddg, your underway just got extended and the captain hasn't told you yet.

I work offshore and have played peggy (cook,a job typically given to people with a peg leg during the age of sail, hence the name) on and off for a few years on tugs/guard boats/transfer ships

Most contracts give the crew a daily subsistence payment of £10-20 a day on top of their wages to cover food costs. Typically on tugs and transfer ships the crew will receive this payment once a week, pool it together and just get the basic shop in. Given that these boats spend a fair bit of time tied up in port the menu is fairly flexible

On guard ships you'll be out for a longer period of time and the company typically covers the food cost directly. I would typically write up a flex-menu and calculate how much shyte I'd need to cover 4-6 men for 4+ weeks at a time and place bulk orders with butchers and green grocers. I would cook things like curries, roasts, ect. Given that weather can be an issue in regards to pans flying everywhere you typically wanna focus on meals that don't need too much prep or observation while cooking in case a general alarm goes off. The hob typically has a steel adjustable rod set you can use to hold the pans in place to a degree. Sadly there's no such setup for the inside of the oven so be sure to keep a lid/foil on top of your trays/pans depending on weather

Food storage is typically 2+ chest freezers and 2+ fridges. There is typically a spare room we use as a general store for tins of pop and vegetables. Carrots are the biggest pain in the ass to keep fresh for long periods

I don't have any breakfast pics but they basically had pancakes or frozen waffles with some kind of breakfast meat every morning. You can get either hard boiled eggs or get eggs to order, aka you request an omletter or scramble with cheese, peppers, mushrooms, etc and someone will cook it for you right there. There's also single serving cereal containers, bread for toast, and instant oatmeal if you want something light. There was always some kind of fruit available, after pulling into the Philippines 2 months ago we had fresh dragonfruit every morning for 2-3 weeks and I planted some of the seeds from one of them (pic related).

What I remember as seafaring food growing up as a young sailor in the Navy

>grog
>Van de Kamp's fish sticks
>Cracker Jacks
>ethnic cuisine from ports of call, usually deep-fried vermin with authentic local spit
>seagulls accidentally boiled in the nuclear reactor steam
>more grog (extra ration during homosexual pagan King Neptune ritual)
>one time, Dinty Moore beef stew confiscated from Somali pirates

Landlubbers have no idea how bad it really is. No one in the Navy knows what the fuck hardtack is or MREs. Navy food is disgusting. Literally the worst cuisine of any service branch. Makes sense because seamen are the branch of the military closest to animals. They make disgusting noises when they eat, slurp everything, seamen wipe their mouths with their jaunty neckerchiefs while laughing and chewing with their mouths full of food. Like what kind of idiot decided a giant boat is the most efficient way to project force in 2022. Starving Marines who eat crayons have a better diet than the average sailor.

These places get decked out by funding. Plus were seen as the queens of the services because our commanders/leaders somewhat care more about us than the ground pounders and seamen. Stateside it's a hit or miss on the quality though depending on who is running the chow halls but overall still better than the rest. Submarine Captain R-41 here, AGB/Q forklift certified. On submarine boats, as you might expect, we exclusively eat submarine sandwiches.

You might think they're called that because they're shaped like submarines, but that's just a coincidence. The real reason for the shape is that long sandwiches can easily be stored in torpedo tubes for snacking while on extended watch against terrorists, Russians, and killer whales. We normally get a choice of three fillings: tuna salad, spicy italian, or chicken-bacon-ranch. (During WW2 italian was unavailable for political reasons.) But due to the hardships of submarine service, the galley allows each sailor to customize his sandwich with the ingredients he likes, and you can also request the sandwich toasted. It's definitely a "perk" of life 20,000 leagues under!

And yes, it's true that the popular Subway sandwich chain was founded by a former USN submariner. The restaurant was originally called "Submarine Underway" but they shortened it. For you, it might just be a normal sandwich--but for those of us who spent months on end fathoms deep in the cold blue seas, it's incredibly nostalgic and undeniably authentic. (I myself, when I was just a humble Coxswains Mate 3rd Class, spent many hours loading giant plastic squeeze tubes of artificial "tuna salad" onto the sub before our dark silent missions. You'd think they could give us real tuna salad, what with submarines being in the ocean and all, but it's still the military, so every meal is still at least 50% sawdust filler.) Anyway, if you enjoy Subway submarine sandwiches, then you should definitely speak to a Navy recruiter about submarine service, because you'll not only get three square subs/day for the duration of your service, but also a lifetime voucher for free extra olives at any participating Subway restaurant.

Eating on a base on Sicily since you got P-3 orders and never have to step foot on a ship > eating at sea > eating on base.
We also could drink 7 days a week.

Has anyone tried putting them in a bucket with slightly damp sand?
It's the classic method to store them for long times.

Yeah sounds fun as fuck to me. My parents don't bring food home for like half the week and I certainly don't get to pick it as is.

Navy sounds cool, not gonna lie. My brain tells me that it's all bullshit though and I'll probably be posted up in some base in a place that is hot as balls in a desert. I won't get to be on a boat at all. Also I can't stand routine and schedules so I know I'd make a shit soldier/sailor.

Shipyards have phantom shitters as well.

Yardbirds are awful. The shipyards would visit homeless centers daily and pick up people to serve as fire watches. Absolutely awful standards where they would be lazy to get overtime pay or just walk out immediately, leave piss bottles everywhere that won't be found for years or sleep in compartments hiding out somewhere

even with those sonars it can be impossible too find a sub. Sweden famously sank a US carrier surround by an fleet without being detected during an exercise.

My yard got rid of fire watches because they didn't want to pay people to stand around doing nothing. We now have record numbers of fires every year and the navy is threatening to shut down our yard, the cheap bastards running the company refuse to bring back firewatches and instead yells
at the mechanics for not maintaining clean workspaces.

Hey man, when you're down in seventh deck in freezing temperatures and you need to go, if your options are to either climb up to flight deck, out of the dry dock completely, or piss in a bottle odds are going to be the bottle.
