It's healthy, has a mild taste, is borderline affordable, and you don't need much of it to make a great meal out of it. Most other fish either have too strong of a taste or have too little fat to feel fulfilling. Also, the name "salmon" gets used for a huge number of different species.

I am Lebanese (we are Phoenicians, not white) and I eat salmon like twice a week.
Its one of the best protein and omega3 sources, has low metals compared to other fish, is easy to make delicious (garlic herb, blackened Cajun, creamy, honey/maple glazed, etc) and is just as good baked as fries. Goes great with olive oil, creamy potatoes, and a Caesar salad.
