Is black label a decent enough scotch to start with? or should I spend more money?

>> No.3939975

It's alright. It was my first scotch. If you can afford to spend more money, by all means spend more money.

>> No.3939983

depends on what you're looking for in scotch. JW is good, but if you like smokier, peatier, or cleaner scotch, then it really depends. I think a good, balanced scotch is the Dalmore. Not too musty, but not so approachable as to be bland. It's got alot of character. I've got a few small, half dollar sized river rocks in the freezer (which i've cleaned and baked to sanitize thoroughly, mind you) that I use to chill my scotch. It's a nice treat for when company comes over.

It's kind of a decent whisky to start with (in one of his book, Charles MacLean says that he likes to drink it after a day spent testing various single malts as this whisky is simple and refreshing).
But I don't know if it would help to educate your taste, I think you should buy a better single malt to start with. It should not be necessarily pricier.

Why not seek out reviews and advice? Without knocking diddly about Scotch and depending upon how much they enjoy whiskey in general they could be in for a bad time if they went and picked up a random bottle. I like Islays with the somewhat medicinal-tasting Lagavulin being a favorite. I also don't know anybody else that will touch the stuff.

> implying someone who is starting with scotch knows what he is looking for in a scotch
> implying any of the shit you talked about is meaningful to someone without a frame of reference

>>3939985

I don't disagree with this

There's been a lot of scotch threads recently.

I wouldn't blow a huge amount on your first bottle of scotch. Black label is fine. A younger single malt would be fine too, and they'd be about the same price. I think you'd benefit more from buying several kinds of scotch and seeing which ones you liked, and what you liked about them.

i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. if he's posting on /ck/ ill go ahead and assume he has a somewhat discerning palate, and if he doesn't, i'll assume since he's trying to get into scotch, i.e. putting the effort forward to make himself knowledgeable about the product, that he's willing to take the recommendation and compare it to other areas he's looked into. instad of assuming he's buttfuckingretarded, i'm giving him some credit. newbies have to start somewhere, after all, and there's no better way to elevate someone's knowledge than to allow them to immerse themselves head on with non-dummy dialogue.
but, umm, anyway, going back to OP, i'll say, I enjoy irish whiskey more than scotch anyway. I prefer the clean flavor of jameson or, dare i say, Powers, to the rougher stuff from scotland.

If he has a discerning palate about scotch, then by definition he is not "starting with" scotch (his words). If he doesn't have a discerning palate about scotch, that doesn't make him buttfuckingretarded, nor does it imply that he has bad taste in food or drink. It only means that he has little experience in scotch.

Sometimes I wonder about the kind of people we get around here, grown men who lack the ability to imagine life lived as a person other than themselves.

i meant a discerning palate as the kitchen goes in general. some tasting skills in one area invariably bleed into one another. im sorry, i thought it was implied.

sometimes, ir eally wonder about some people's lack of intellectual parsimony here. grown men who lack the ability to give the benefit of the doubt to others and assume they are unwaveringly right, even when presented with (at best) ambiguous information. of course, it could just be your reading skills that are debilitated.

Having experience (or inexperience) in scotch tasting has nothing to do with being right or wrong. Pull your head out of your ass and realize that most people don't obsess over what Michael Jackson had to say about this or that dram. Food tasting has no crossover value for someone who hasn't tasted at least a few single malts already.

Try getting out more and meeting actual human beings some of whom may not consider the rituals surrounding brown liquor consumption to be a microcosm of human ethics.

I personally find the 12 year Glenfiddich ($20) to be as good as Black Label.

Also, what kind of flavor differences are caused by double vs triple distilling?

Last week I bought my first whisky bottle ever, I had earlier just tasted some cheap shit while drunk, and it was the worst booze I ever tasted.

I bought some Speyburn 10yo Single Malt, after the first two sips I was like "oh god did I just waste 38€ on this shit". But then I started to taste all the different tastes and it's fucking good. I added a ~tablespoon of cold water and it was even nicer.

What do you think of this scotch? What should I buy next? I'd like maybe a bit smokier and peatier, but not too much (for starters).

>> No.3940967

you can get cheaper single malts whcih don't have grain "whisky" in them.
glenfidich, highland park, old pulteney are all decent. many americans like glenmorangie as a first scotch as it is matured in bourbon casks.
