throughout elementary and middle school, it was my dream to become a chef.. as a career
that dream is now dead because of just how bad I was at cooking, how clumsy and just how much of my parent's money that ended up burnt or spilled.
now though, it's gotten to the point where it's time to ask for help, from the smartest people in the internet
/ck/, give me a few tips and tricks to cooking please
I'm a disgrace in the kitchen, and the sooner this high school student learns how to cook, the sooner he will stop failing at microwaving hot chocolate.... and the sooner i'll stop eating the disgusting school cafeteria food

Look up youtube video tutorials. Pay attention to the way that each variable is controlled - the heat, tools (spatula, whisk, etc), and cooking environment.

But mostly, it sounds like you just need experience. Everybody sucks at first.

>> No.4159193

You sound under the age of 18.

That being said, just find a food blog or youtube chef that you like. Chef John has a lot of really simple recipes that you can go for. Stay away from the prime rib for now. Go for crepes, meatballs, chicken parmesan.

>> No.4159209

Master the egg. Learn how to scramble, fry, over easy, hard boil, soft boil, and poach. This is your first step, I'm not even kidding. Then move on to the other stuff

>> No.4159212

Get an internship, get yelled at a lot; never make mistakes due to fear of getting yelled at. Also, the best way to remember not to be a fuck is to maintain the concept of mise en place and to always THINK before your actions..

>> No.4159218

How about asking your mom first?

Also sounds like someone never helped parents around the kitchen. If you did, you would have covered all the basics already.

First off first off, the first step onto becoming a chef is to obtain an appreciation for food. Open up your pallet; try everything, no matter how gross.

> Master the egg.

That's how I started out. I used to be grill bitch/dishwasher, 3rd shift when I was 16. One week mantwat "chef" was off, so me and "sous boy" (he was black and the chef called him that. This was 1989, shit was different). We burned through about 50 eggs, but in that hours' time, I knew about all I ever wanted to know about eggs. Pancakes took ~3 minutes to master, bacon is impossible to fuck up. Next day I learned all the sammiches. Within three days I had the whole menu down except for seeing how the roasts and soups were made. Different crew of old ladies did that first shift.

Was a disgusting, stinky, humiliating job, but after all these years it is still the "gift that keeps on giving". Perhaps spend your summers and off hours getting some experience.

>fast food every night

I'd learn to cook just to avoid dying if I were you.
Any friends with really nice moms who can cook along with you?

Youtube. Also pay attention when you are cooking, don't try to multitask. Someone I knew back in highschool set his mother's roof on fire, boiling an egg while playing dota.

If you weren't lying, then you are too young.

I'd gladly do gift exchanges with other people on the internet, but not when they are from 4chan.

... but you're on 4chan. Is it not possible to believe that 4chan is populated by people who are as you are?

Also what is this gift exchange thing?

People find cooking hard?

This is news to me.

Don't put your fingers in the way of the knife.
Watch things to make sure they don't boil over.
If something is burning then take it off the heat.
Taste the things you are cooking before serving to make sure that they taste fine.
Learn how long it takes to cook things so that you are easily able to manage your time in the kitchen so that things will be ready to serve simultaneously.
Learn the basics then become adventurous.
Try new recipes. If something doesn't look or taste right, then modify it. The worst that can happen is that it tastes bad.

>> No.4159495

Practice. Constantly. You don't need talent, you need patience and practice. Work from recipes. Don't give up on yourself. Ever.
