best beer i've had is hop devil by victory, great ipa

i want to try heaven and hell, its served at dogfishead taverns, a black and tan that is composed of world wide stout and 120 minute

worst beer ive ever had is either geneese cream ale or keystone light or ice

I had a Stone IPA for the first time yesterday. Bought a single for a buck. It was great and I need to buy more Stone beers. I know Self-Righteous is supposed to be good, as well as Arrogant Bastard.

I also have been wanting to get ahold of some Ruthless Rye. Never had a rye beer before, but I do enjoy rye whiskey.

I have been wanting to get more into Belgian/German beers, so some recommendations there would be welcome. I am not the biggest fan of hefeweizen (I even tried Weihenstephaner).

As a hardcore craft beer enthusiast whose go-to session beer is Stone IPA every time, PLEASE try more of their beers. Every one you try is going to taste heavier and stronger but those guys are fucking geniuses. They do not brew a bad beer. Their RIS (Russian Imperial Stout) is world class. Depending on where you are you might still be able to find a bottle of Double Bastard (released every November).

Belgianfag here, my personal favourites include:
Rochefort 10, a dark beer with a deep and complex taste (seriously this shit is like nirvanna in your mouth, but I'm bad at describing taste and it's been too long since I've had one)
Karmeliet: a surprisingly sweet blonde beer, but still balanced
Omer: another blonde, I prefer it over Duvel as it's similar in taste yet less bitter
My personal preference in pils is Jupiler, with Stella in second, but as you hopefully already know you don't drink pils for the taste, so don't blow your cash on imported Stella.

I have forgotten the name of any of the three worst I've had. I think Rasputin was one of them though, which is American. I also quite like La Chouffe, because of the taste, and my grandparents have their second house about fifteen minutes away from the brewery, so I used to visit the place every year. They have a small restaurant next to the brewery where they use a lot of the beers, not that special but worth a visit. Apart from that it's mostly La Trappe and whatever's on tap in the establishment I'm visiting. Damn you, student budget.

Local brew called Baltic Porter. Sweet, bitter, rich but smooth. Drinks almost like water.
And as for shitty beers, I've been trying for the longest time for IPAs but it just isn't taking. The fanishness and popularity of IPAs makes me think there's some sort of hops cult that's churning out believers. It's just bitter, vaguely fruity beer where all the craft brewers all try to out-hop one another.
If I start making my own beer, I'm going to call my beer IHH (India Hoppy Hop) and it'll have hop sediments so you can get your hops fix quick without pretending like you actually enjoy the shit.

been drinking the last of the 805 my sister brought me :) Been wanting to try Flying Dog Brewery's limited edition "El Dorado" IPA. I love their shit and drink that on the regular. or whatever I get from costco. last week it was Sierra Nevada Torpedos... as for the worst beer, I would have to say that award goes to a home brew disastrously done by friend of mine. He made it for a LARP group competition, and the first test batches were... special.

If you look at the various beer review websites all the highest rated in the world (Save some Trappist beers) come from North America. I'm not that guy, but I think the point is not to discredit Europe for its contribution to the beer community or it's current state - some really great beers come from Europe.

But. Right now, small breweries in the US are taking over due to the quality and fresh ideas that they're putting into their beers. It's not that one country is better than the other, it's just that it would appear the US is more exciting in it's ideas at the moment.

>> No.4190122

There are still some breweries in Europe which try new ideas.
Mikkeller for denmark, Emelisse for the netherlands, Brewdog in Scotland...

The important words: "would appear" and "exciting".
Microbrewery is a hype industry in the US. We don't get many unadulterated US tv channels over here, but the noticeably ones like Discovery, Nat Geo and Bloomberg have all of them run puff piece shows about US brewers.

I like the idea of brewing being taken back from the conglomerates, but you need to cut through the hype machine of rich marketers and go for the product. USA has not established its ability to consistently make magical ales like the Brits and the Belgians as yet.

The breweries I'm referencing don't have any hype marketing money to advertise with - it's basically all word-of-mouth from fans of their brews. You don't see any Three Floyds billboards or ads in magazines.

That rule applies just as much here. If they can afford to really put up an ad campaign, they probably aren't worth your time.

marketing today isn't billboards and tv commercials. that's dinosaur.

marketing today is viral, social and astroturf (fake grassroots support). hype is hype whether it's commercial or amateur enthusiasts. There is much hype surrounding the US microbrew market. Hype should never influence the drinking of ales. "Appearing" to offer "exciting" products is falling for the hype.

Well, it was quite a while since I had a beer, but the only thing I can really remember being put off by was the taste, so I suppose I could start with that.

What do Britfags think about the minimum price being proposed?

45p/unit England/Wales
50p/unit Scotland

This will mean most beers go up in price substantially.
