For ordinary circumstances, is the only difference between "sushi" and "sashimi" the rice?

Correct

Sashimi is always raw and sushi is sometimes cooked.

>> No.4629165

"sushi" is the presentation. "sashimi" is raw seafood. It's kind of like "BBQ" explains the genre, and "Baby Back Ribs", explains the actual dish. BTW, "sushi" does not have to be raw.

Because "sushi" is "sashimi". Sushi can be raw or cooked, again, the word "sushi" is NOT a name of a food, it is the name of the style of food and how it is prepared. "Sashimi" is a style of sushi that is served raw. The rice has nothing to do with it.

No, sushi is the presentation of the dish, it has nothing to do with rice.
>>4629206
Because you are mistakingly calling sushi a specific food. Once again, SUSHI is a description of hos the food was prepared. SASHIMI is a dish of SUSHI that refers to raw fish or seafood.

Yes, sashimi IS sushi, it is the raw STYLE of sushi. Sushi is the descriptive, not the food. It's hard trying to translate from Japanese. Maybe this will help: Sushi is a style of food like "Italian" or "BBQ", or "Chinese", or "Mexican". In a sentence it would be "let's go out for sushi, where we can have some sashimi." Sushi being the style of food, and sashimi being the specific dish of raw seafood.

No, that style would be "Japanese"

If you get more specific of what type of "Japanese" food you want, you may say noodles, you may say tempura, or you may say "sushi," in which cause you're talking about a dish made of vinegared rice, likely some seaweed sheets, and some kind of topping or filling

Sushi refers to the vinegared rice, and is the only essential piece of sushi.

Sashimi is NOT sushi, and refers only to thinly sliced meat or fish. Sashimi does not have rice. This is why it is not sushi.

There are all sorts of kinds of sushi. There is Nigiri, which is what is in OP's picture, which is just sushi rice, pressed into a rectangle, with sashimi pressed on top, often with wasabi in between.

There are also various rolls, called Makizushi, which is a piece of nori, filled with sushi rice and other ingredients, that is rolled up and cut into pieces.

When someone says "I could care less," they're utilizing a language skill called sarcasm. Basically the situation would be someone is explaining something to a person, usually in desperation, and then that person challenges them with "I could care less," as if to say "keep explaining your dilemma, as every sentence you utter makes me care less for your plight"

"Sushi" is an all encompassing term, inluding everything including Nigiri, Sashimi, rolls, etc.

Nigiri is the regular sushi - the rice with raw fish on top. Nigiri is also sushi, obviously.

Sashimi is also sushi, obviously. It's just like nigiri but without the rice.

No it is not. You are wrong. Sashimi is not Sushi, because it does not use Sushi rice, the essential ingredient in sushi, where it gets it's namesake. That's like me giving you a sandwich, and you realizing it's just some lunch meat with mayo and cheese. Thats not a sandwich.
