It's an Austrian roll in the first place (it's the Austrian Kaiser, not the German one, in the name after all - specifically Franz Joseph I), so at the very least it's a thing in Austria and the former areas of the Habsburg monarchy.

It's very popular here in southern Poland for instance.

I have exactly opposite feelings. I've seen some fucked up stamped Kaiser rolls in my time, but look at the roll in OP pic. I am attracted to that roll in every sense of the word, it's so perfect. I would marry it and make love to it, have kids with it and grow old together.

Well, I would do all that if it wasn't so enticing. I can never resist eating it before proposing so my star-crossed romance is doomed.

I've been to the US for a couple of months and I've mostly seen stuff similar to pic related (although usually with poppies or other stuff) sold as Kaiser rolls. The crust pattern was very superficial and thoroughly unsatisfying - it seemed little more than cosmetic when its entire point is to make the crust nice and crunchy. In that I agree with >>4768187, although I would say the roll in OP pic looks quite good in that regard, more or less how I'd get my rolls back home in St. Pölten. And yes, back in Austria they're plain most of the time.

Kaiser roll is second best, plain German rolls are god tier.
They are made of the same dough, just a little bit bigger, and in different shapes. Sometimes they have sesame or poppy seeds sprinkled on top. They are perfect for any type of sandwich, as a quick snack or as a side to soups and stews.
