I was lucky to find a Lucas on a candy bag, I remember on all the mexican birthday parties I went to they would give us a bag filled with the cheapest candies they could find, I forget the names but usually were.

-some little "chocolate bar" in a yellow/green envelope, more of a thin cookie doused on syrup, tasted like newspaper with chocolate.
-A hard as balls round pink chewing gum, it was not uncommon to see one on the floor with a bloody child's tooth on it.

As much as I hate Hershey's, their dark chocolate isn't bad. It's just the milk they use that makes it taste like Satan's bile. If all you've access to is Hershey's, Godiva, Mars and Nestle, go with any Hershey's dark chocolate. It's cost effective and pretty good. I don't think Mars makes any dark chocolate and their milk chocolate is far to sweet for me. I'm not an expert on Godiva. I'm sure I can count on my fingers how many times I've had it. Nestle is the McDonald's of chocolate. It's not bad, but it's not good, either.

If you've access to EU or eastern European chocolates, I could make some recommendations. If there is an Aldi or IKEA (srsly) in your area, I can recommend some stuff, too.

I've never ordered any. There are some smaller American chocolate makers who are every bit as good as EU and eastern European chocolate makers but their prices are outrageous. Only one makes a bar better than anything I've had in Europe. And I'm Swiss. He's a single man who makes chocolate himself, bean to bar. I forgot his name or the name of his chocolate business, but it's based out of Virginia, I think.

Anyway, as a Swiss, I'm biased towards Frey. Lindt&Sprüngli is like the Five Guys of chocolate. It's more expensive and of better quality than Nestle (as I said alread, the McDonald's of chocolate) and some will argue until they're blue in the face about it being the best, but these are generally people who've never had good chocolate (or burgers) before. Frey is much, much better. I used to be able to buy it from Target here in the US, but they stopped carrying it. They now stock Perugina instead.
Nestle being the McDonald's-like enterprise it is has or had its fingers in many pies so while the parent company might be meh, some of its divisions are quite good. Perugina, for example, is now owned by Nestle.
At Aldi, anything under the Choceur brand will be both quite good and quite cost effective. IKEA sells chocolate bars that are also good and cheap.
Ferrero is well-known for it's Rocher brand. Not generally available in the US is Ferrero RondNoir (black ball). It's basically Rocher but with a dark chocolate centre rather than milk chocolate and hazelnut.
Eastern Europe actually makes some surprisingly good chocolates. Despite the name, Alpen Gold is a Russian company. They make Nussbeisser/Nussknacker amongst others. They are of very, very good quality.
Nestle's Turkish division makes better chocolate than it's US and western European confectioners.

I remember Hersey's being good when I was a kid.
But back then it was packaged in some sort of silver foil-like paper then wrapped with the paper Hersheys wrapper.
First time I tried a Hershey's in their new packaging which is all plastic and air-tight I couldn't finish the bar. It was just bad.
Later on I was given one of those GIANT Hershey bars as a present, which had it's classic wrapping and was actually good. I snacked on it for a week.

Hersheys chocolate has a very acidic sort of taste to it that a lot of us find reminiscent of vomit.

I'm not sure why our chocolate is so different or if all of your chocolate is so markedly different. In the UK most chocolate we eat is milk chocolate, but I can assure you that the dark chocolate that we have (often very dark), doesn't have the same strange quality that Hersheys has.

That said, I basically went through an entire pack of Hershey's kisses a few years ago and by the end I was definitely enjoying them a hell of a lot more than the first few I tasted. Plus most chocolate we have in the UK is horribly, horribly sweet.

Because every time I've tried Hersheys it has tasted like vomit smells. When I was in school a friend of mine bought a big box of them back from America for his dad, he didn't like them so the kid brought them into school, nobody who tried them could stand them. So when I went to America myself I thought I'd try a Hershey bar, perhaps the travel fucked them up somehow, But no -they are not chocolate, they taste like vomit and they are the wrong texture, I would rather eat a pencil than another Hershey bar.

There are tons of variations of salmiac but if you ever try ordering some again, or if anyone else wants to, this Super Salmiakki is one I'd recommend trying. Good for those not used to salmiac and for anyone who doesn't like overly salty and strong salmiac.

It's weet instead of being too salty and not too strong. But the salmiac flavor is clearly there and gets stronger the more you eat.
