Hey /ck/, do you ever have restaurant stories? Share your horrible experiences as an employee or guest ITT.

>Work at a high class fish restaurant in northern Norway.
>Loads of northern light tourists visit our restaurant because they think fish is the most traditional Norwegian meal.
>Get loads of asian sex tourists (conceiving a child beneath the northern lights makes it a happy child)
>They always want loads of shellfish.
>If they figure out the bread is free they always ask for more, even if we've only just put in on the table.
>Fucking french tourists that can't speak a word of english but will correct you every time you present a french wine or method of cooking. FUCK YOU, I KNOW PERFECTLY WELL HOW TO PRONOUNCE COURT BOUILLON AND BOUILLABAISSE
>Americans whining about prices after they've ordered and eaten. Never tips.
>Go to a table and ask if they're enjoying their half finished food. Yes, they love it.
>When I go to pick up their empty plates they say they didn't like it. FUCK YOU.
>Yes, the Crème brûlée is supposed to be this dark. No its not supposed to be served warm. No its not supposed to be like a pudding.

Yes, today was a shitty day at work.

Life is a lot less frustrating if you just remove yourself from your job. I work in the security sector and deal with countless calls a day from people who had no idea how to operate their system. For me, someone who has worked with them for years, it's easy to think "jesus you're a retard, the button is right there". But that's not fair--they aren't as exposed to it as I am. So I always remind myself that every time the phone rings, I need to set my expectations very low. Don't take shit personally. They're bound to think the same thing about you when you go to them for their service. Life has been a lot less stressful when I stopped giving a damn what people do/say when I'm at work.

>Loads of shellfish, lobster and soup is ready to go.
>Must be the starters for the party of 6.
>Ticket says table for 2.
>wat.
>Take the food out, awe upon the sight of two humongous people. Their guts are sticking so far out they're actually blocking the pathway between tables.
>They're americans... Jolly.
>Have to move them to a bigger table for 4 one yard away.
>They complain about not seeing northern lights.
>They complain about not being able to see the midnight sun aswell.
>They wanted to catch both suns in one picture.

>At the end of their meal their ticked ends up around 800$.

Honestly the guests are 99% of the time great to be around. But sometimes you get shitty people:

>Two people in their 40s are on what looks like a date.
>They order, everything is going well. Looks like they're enjoying themselves.
>Go to their table to pick up the empty plates.
>"Hope you enjoyed everything"
>The man says "Yes, it was excellent" but gets cut off by the woman.
>"I did not like it one bit!"
>Her plate is clear, only thing left are some mushrooms on the side.
>Ask politely why.
>"Because I don't eat canned shit!" while pointing at the mushrooms.
>They're actually butter cooked mushrooms that we get fresh. Tell her about the process.
>"Don't stand there and lie to me, I know darn well they're the canned shit you get at the store! Look, they're still wet!"
>...
>The man is covering his face in shame at this point. I have no idea what to say so I just tell her we're sorry and leave it at that.
>Man later apologies and leave a rather large tip.

>> No.5217579

>>5217563
Pizza delivery isn't hard. Its small shit, all you do is grab a couple boxes and go.And you are driving through mostly quiet residential neighborhoods. My average order is $150 and we do much more than pizzas. Orders go up to $5000 or so on occasion. Lots of side items and details that I have to check in before I leave. I also make most of it myself. Also, I work in a central business district and all my orders go out at lunch time. The traffic and inept drivers would make you want to hang yourself if you weren't used to it. Not saying my gig isn't great, the tips make up for my constant stress. But I'm not dropping off two pizzas to the house down the street either. This shit is big. I've catered to an NFL quarterbacks birthday party.

You should try to find a higher tier place where you have to present your food, the wine map actually matters and they change menues on a daily basis. I'm working on it. When I got hired on I had no food experience. I'm doing very well in the business now, when new hire-ons come in they assume I'm a manager or shift leader because I know the ins and outs of our store so well and have a strong leadership presence. I've outgrown my job though, I'm the catering guy. I won't move up in my company but I can find a better job doing what I do. I'd like to move up to a real restaurant before I get into the real high end stuff. Experience is everything. I genuinely love what I do and want to make a career of working as a caterer, I know it can be done. This is the first job I've had where I actually look forward to going into work. It isn't necessary. If you are content where you are then fuck having any leadership expectations or responsibilities if you aren't paid for them. Just do your job well.

I call shots because I want to improve and get gud. But I make 15 cents more hourly than the new folk, not counting tips. As my first food job I'm pretty much using this gig as training at this point. I do act like a manager sometimes. I take on more responsibilities than I'm paid for. The way I see it I'm in school right now, but I'm getting comfortable barking out orders and taking the reins when it gets thick and sketchy. But like I said, pleb tier deli with a huge business. Most coworkers are slow and stupid, and don't care about shit. I'm about done and will be working at a higher establishment sometime this year.

I work at a sushi restaurant and usually 99/100 of our costumers is nice and polite, but that 1% sure as hell make up for the rest:

>People who will go completely bananas if we happen to forget to include soysauce in their take away. It's a fucking 2p bottle and I know it's annoying but I find it extremely hard to believe that none of these persons don't have a bottle of soya in their house anyway

>People who ask us if it's ok if they bring along some mcdonalds or pizza for their kids, because of their spoiled palates

>People who don't know that the vinegar mix you use to make the rice contains gluten and then goes apeshit bonkers when they find out, even though they could easliy have obtained this info with a quick 10 second research

>People with gluten allergy who don't fucking inform us until we are bringing their food to them, and then gets mad when we inform them about it, and that we won't take responsibility for any discomfort they may get from eating the rice

>People with any allergies in general who can't be arsed to fucking tell us until after we serve their food and then expect us to do it all over

>People who sits at tables for longer than two hours without buying more food, dessert or coffee. It's not your personal clubhouse, we are a business and need money from our costumers, so if you are going to sit for more than two hours, at least have the decency to make up for it.

>Lady calls in
>She was here with here friend yesterday evening and a few hours later they were permitted to the hospital with food poisoning, and now they want compensation

Our food had to be down right rotten for them to become sick in mere hours. Besides, they where the only people out of almost 400 who either dined, or bought take away, that became ill that day. And of course she couldn't be bothered to show us a copy of the tox report that she clearly would be able to obtain from the hospital, yet she still demanded us to believe her.

>They just fucking love it

>That one muslim guy who asked me if our fish was halal
>I couldn't help myself and just broke down laughing while other costumers gave my scared looks
>Turns out he said it as a joke, and tipped me $30 just for getting it

>A dinner party didn't like the sushi, so instead of starting the good ol' "being the messager between two angry parents" role, I just told them we would just take the food off their bill

I worked at an expensive white tablecloth restaurant at a swanky beach resort in Florida.

I have witnessed:
- A girl eating a $30 filet mignon with ketchup
-Another girl picking all the lobster out of a $28 lobster mac and cheese
- Multiple old ladies putting ice in $60/bottle red wines
- A family that spilled a whole bottle of red wine into a white leather chair and left it pooling until their 7 yearold child told me
- An old woman ordering from her room grilled chicken filets for her bischon frise
- A child running under occupied tables stealing their napkins and dinnerware while her parents pointedly ignored it, and were outraged when my manager told them to control the kid or leave
- An old man argued with me that the fish in front of him was not grouper, and would not believe me until our sous chef came out to assure him it was
- Trophy wives on the new diet loosing their shit over their dish not being gluten free but downing diet cokes and ordering desserts (with GLUTEN)
-People, in order to impress their table mates, ordering foe gras (and saying "FOI-GRASS) and THEN loosing their shit when they find out its duck liver

So many things:

Chef telling us we can't take reservations over 12 because her line can't handle it.

Woman giving a bad review because I should have comped their whole meal. They complained about the chili so I took it off and bought her a drink, the guy ate his whole club except for the corners which he complained were burnt.

Ordering a F.O, in a bread bowl and frozen sweet potato fries and waiting 20 minutes for it.

Having a 13 top complain a little about their food, which I passed on to Chef, then go out to the front desk and yell at the poor front desk clerk about the quality of the food, it being cold, the wait time and wanting to see a manager. Funny story, I'm the shift supervisor and was handling it with the other guests still inside. I take care of the items they complained about from the start and some drinks and we're all happy. Proceed to have Chef bitch me out about not believing what I already told her was a problem.

There being only two other tables in the restaurant and ordering fish and chips and a turkey burger for my table. It takes just over 20 minutes for it to come up. Point this out to cook and chef and have her bitch me out again.

I'm so sick of this bullshit with the kitchen I'm ready to go to the GM for the hotel. Chef constantly claims her line is too small yet I remember there being a time we could do 100 fine dining covers and another 100 in the casual restaurant with the same exact line.

There's an eight burner stove, close to six foot grill, two fryers and then a large flat top she never uses on the line, she has two three shelf two door convection ovens around the end of the line and a salad station. The food runners make all the salads so all her cooks need to do are proteins and sandwiches. The menu is less complicated than you would see at a Friendly's or Chili's.
Her staff just sucks. I saw an actual chef and a cook turn out almost 100 plated dinners in an hour one night on that same line.

Its not okey to underpay and run. Its okey to complain and explain, what happens next is up to the restaurant. If its a nice place they should explain that there will be a wait, give complementary wine on the house or discount on the food. Eating and THEN refusing to pay because the wait was long is in a grey area, but you're a dick if you don't talk to the waiter before eating and then deciding to not pay. When I'm petting and playing with another dog, though, she'll go and pick up a toy (this is the ONLY time she plays with toys) and start tossing it around acting like it's the most fun toy ever. The dog I'm petting will become very interested and go take it from her and start playing with it, then she'll jump on my lap smiling and wagging her tail.

Oh but back on topic.
Once went to a chain resturant and found a blue AAA rayocav battery in my half-eaten pasta. Biggest concern was that the battery was cooked with the pasta and I had eaten acid, but after talking to the manager they found it had fallen out of a thermometer after the pasta had been cooked.

A huge drop in like that should only be a problem around and after dinner times, not around lunch.

If you order various meals then everything will slow down, but that restaurant obviously had priority issues in the kitchen if they can't get you free bread and salads within 30 mins.

Cold food and dirty cutlery is unacceptable.

Either your waiter messed up your order or the kitchen got a bad head chef and staff because only half of your main meals got out.

If you didn't complain to the waiter before you had eaten you're in the wrong for not paying. If you complained before you're in the right.

A waiter should never threaten a customer. A police report can go to the media and you don't want angry customers to be interviewed. Also, waiters are supposed to give you a pleasant experience. The kitchen is supposed to give you pleasant food. The experience is part of what you pay for.

Since I went to culinary school for two years I can work as a waiter, chef, butcher, or whatever if I'd like and I can do so in any country because its an international trade. A new waiter at my restaurant moved here from Romania because his skills allows him to work wherever he wants.

I'm also guaranteed work and good pay and later when I'm burned out I'll start teaching in a culinary school. All my friends went to university and they have huge debts, work at a patrol station because they can't get a job and have no pride what so ever in what they're doing. They're just doing it because they felt it was expected of them.

I went to a pub with my boyfriend, his sister, and a bunch of our mutual friends. There were 11 of us. We ate some food, but spent most of the night ordering various pitchers and socializing. My boyfriend's sister has been working in restaurants since she was 16 and was currently working as head waitress at a higher-end pub. Because of this, she's extremely critical of every server every time we go out to eat. She is also an alcoholic.

On this particular evening, the pub was busy, but not crazy. We rarely saw our waitress, and she was a little bit snippy with us, even though we were ordering more alcohol every time we saw her. Obviously, none of us were that happy with her, but we were having a good enough time with each other that it didn't really matter.

When the time came to pay the bill, my boyfriend's sister (who was easily three times drunker than any of us) demanded to speak with the manager on duty to complain about our waitress. She then proceeded to SCREAM at him for hiring such incompetent staff. The waitress showed up at some point and she started screaming at the waitress, too. She was saying stuff like "You are the worst waitress I have ever seen. You should be fired for the stuff you've done tonight, etc."

The manager apologized profusely and comped almost all of our alcohol. When we went to leave after paying for what was left of our bill, she turned around and started yelling at the manager and the waitress some more. We practically had to drag her out of the pub.

I won't go back there ever again out of embarrassment. And I never really liked her to begin with, but now I pretty much avoid her.

>I went to subway a couple years ago to get a 12" steak and cheese. I asked for hot peppers in it among other toppings. It was takeout so I didn't open it until I was home. When I chewed in it I felt something really hard to chew and nasty tasting. It turned out that all the hot peppers were cut but they left the tails or whatever stem they hang from. I thought it was retarded so I went back there for the guy to make me another one or give me a refund. He told me they came like this and that it was normal. I told him it is retarded to not take out the stem before cutting them. He replied that this is how they were shipped and that they did not cut them on the premises. I knew that was a lie and going to multiple subways and always ordering hot peppers this had never happened to me. I looked in the condiment trays and noticed that there were a bunch of hot pepper heads still with the fucking stems. I was like are you serious did you just use all the leftovers or something. He insisted that this was normal. I told him that I was not satisfied and demanded a refund or at least another sandwich. He said he couldn't do that. Service there is always better than subway the clerks smile and are happy to serve you and plus they cut the cold cuts and cheese right in front of you like at the butcher. It's a little more expensive but taste that much better. Anyways went there for pickup once on a lunch at work. I was with a friend, we both ordered combos with a soft drink and a chip for me and cookies for him. We got back to work and as we were eating noticed some small thin hard parts in the bread. It tasted and felt like strings of metal or something. After we both figured it was all over the bread of both are sandwiches we called to ask about it. They said the manager wasn't there but they took our complaint and said they would call us back ASAP. The did call back and it ended up being actual metal from those wire sponges to scrub off hard to clean stuff while washing the dishes. The manager offered us to get a full refund plus a free combo of the same value which we accepted. The thing is our sandwiches were still ok to eat after we took out all the metal parts carefully. So it was basically a free 2 for 1 meal for both of us.

Oh yeah I have one more but in this one I am a waiter and the customer is retarded.

>Work at a restaurant as waiter and this old lady asks me for tea. She specifies she want's it boiling hot. I tell her that I get it from the hot water machine at the station where there are the teapots and teabags. She says she drinks it burning hot. I'm like ok whatever and go and get her fucking tea. I didnt have any other customers really so as soon as I prepared her little cup, plate and teapot I poured the boiling water in and headed straight to her table. When I got there she said the water wasn't hot enough. I said that it was boiling and as we could both see there was steam coming out of the teapot. She insisted that it was merely warm and that she could put her finger in it to prove me she wouldn't get burned. I told her not to attempt this because I did not want to get in trouble for her getting injured. I continued telling her that it was indeed boiling and straight out of the machine. She said she wanted me to boil water in a pot on the stove in the kitchen and put it in. I said that boiling point of water cannot exceed 100 degrees celsius wether its from the stove or the machine a when the water boils its always the same temperature, it's physics/chemistry. She continued to insist, by then our argument had clearly let he water get colder so I told her I would heat it up anyways. I put the water in a big cup and threw it in the microwave for a couple minutes because I did not want to bother the cooks with such trivial shit. I then headed back with the boiling hot water. The lady said it had not been long enough and that surely the water was still not hot enough. I was just pissed at this point but kept my cool and said alright mam and headed back to do as she fancied. When I took out a pot and starting pouring water the chef was like WTF are you doing in my kitchen? I had to explain to him the whole story. cont.

Good risotto is.
But it's a incredible gap between good and bad risotto, one is a creamy delight that has angels dancing on your palate, the other... is rice gruel with bits of shrimp and ball-pepper.

This. Proper risotto should have the rice grains intact and distinct while still being creamy. You can overcook risotto for sure, but that's like saying steak is leathery and brown because it can be cooked too much.

When you prepare food next to guests its called russian serving, like a flambé or tranching. The reason it went out of style is because it takes a long time and when other tables see it they want to have that as well creating a snowball effect. Kinda sad really, feels like a lost art these days.

I'm applying to be an apprentice chef though, over 4 years because I haven't gone through any schooling. I really get what you say about being proud of what you do, only after spending a week in the kitchen. I spent a year working as a kindergarten assistant, 8 hours a day and felt like shit for the rest of the day and weekend, but the 13 hour shifts in the kitchen left me feeling great. Fuck, food is great.

lol yeah. before i worked there, they were located in a way classier hotel. that hotel was bought out by a different company and they booted the steakhouse because of contracts or something. it really is in a fine dining, privately owned restaurant group. they had great food and i'm still friends with the chef. unfortunately, the guy who originally owned the restaurant group left and then the groupons started happening after they got transferred to a trash hotel.

the woman dressed as little bo-peep was from a huge halloween party. guess they were trying to break a world record. then all the rich filth strolled over to our place for dinner.

the servers talked about how things had changed and how they never made any money anymore. sad shit.

>In reality even on bad nights they make many, many more times minimum wage

This is incredibly misleading and, in most cases, blatantly false.

They MAY make TWICE minimum wage, and on a fantastic night they may make three times minimum wage (over $20/hour). "Many, many more times minimum wage" would be reserved for higher-end restaurants.

So you are contending that the average server makes "many, many more times minimum wage." How much is "many, many more"? Five times minimum wage? You have servers walking out the door making over $36 per hour, or just under $300 for an eight hour shift? So in a year, with two weeks vacation, servers at your restaurant made $70,000?

Fuck, sign me up.

>Fuck, sign me up.

You act like you can just walk in and get hired as a server. It takes a special kind of personality to make that kind of money. And, yeah. Servers can make that much in a nice restaurant in say, Vegas, New York or even Scottsdale.

I knew a bartender who was pulling an easy 75k working at Le Bernardin.

I'm fully aware of this, but see the original post that started the discussion:

>>5228626

The claim isn't about servers in the relatively small number of high-end restaurants. Of course you can make a career and very good money serving at a nice restaurant. But that anon didn't qualify his statement at all, and I think it's pretty obvious that he was speaking about the majority of servers. Any claim to the contrary would be some serious backpedaling.

Oh. Well, servers usually do still make several times the minimum wage, but they rarely sustain that for eight hours.

It's more likely that they make 30 or 40 dollars an hour, but they'll only work a 3 or 4 hour shift.
