Why are there still people in this world who can't even cook the most basic things?

I've noticed this mostly occurs with Americans who's families have lived in America for many generations. The kids can't cook and the parents thrive on take out, frozen shit and boxed mixes.

I'm not hating on America or anything (first generation Murkin here) I'm just saying that I've noticed this mostly occuring with Americans and it's something that seriously confuses me.

Do you guys agree/disagree? Any thoughts on the weird trend of people NOT teaching their kids how to cook?

woudln't it be nice?
But sadly in our generation most kids put it as something beneath them.
Why waste time 'prepping ingredients' when there are box mixes that have everything I need in one!

I know your pain but it is what it is.

>> No.5500228

it's probably the same way all over the world and i doubt its just a recent thing

some people just don't have the time and inclination to cook, especially when its so easy and convenient to get ready made food

my family and i eat out practically all the time because my parents are too tired to slave over a hot stove after coming home from work and i learnt how to cook from the internet and a lot of trial and error

>> No.5500233

Yeah, it's pretty common for people to not know how to cook in the US. Most parents can't teach their kids, because they themselves don't know. And for some reason, most people have virtually no interest in learning. "Oh, I can't cook, I'm so terrible at it!" is something you hear pretty regularly, like it's fashionable to be ignorant about cooking.

Seriously I never got it. I understand some people are too busy to learn sometimes, but it doesn't take much to fry or boil a simple egg, or maybe even just cook some dry pasta!

a lot of people can't even do that, and that's just disappointing in my opinion.

>>5500228
I understand that some people don't enjoy slaving for hours over a hot stove, but it only takes about 7 minutes to boil pasta and it takes under 5 minutes to pan fry or grill a rare steak. For breakfast it takes about 6 minutes to soft boil and egg, and about 1 or 2 minutes to fry or scramble them, and a lot of people can't even do that!

In my own personal experience, I know very few people who don't cook for themselves/claim to not be able to cook. There are certainly varying levels of skill amongst my peers, with most being somewhere around a vague standard of adequate and few being a bit deluded as to how well they can prepare certain dishes, but then I suppose no one is good at everything.

I dunno about everywhere else but I know that they dissolved Home Ec classes before I was even in high school or junior high or middleschool. I suspect that this is more or less a nationwide phenomenon. My parents subsequently blame this decision for nobody in my generation knowing how to cook. I became a cook out of necessity, because my roomates in college were slobs who could subsist on diets entirely composed of "chicken bakes" and "bagel dogs" whereas I know that real food doesn't come individually wrapped.

>> No.5500476

My personal experience? My parents got pregnant not long before graduating high school. They spent most of my childhood working, then going to school and working, then working again. I'm 23 and even now my dad will work 24 or 36 hour shifts. I think right now he's entitled to eat what he wants when he gets home.

But working isn't the reason they eat like shit. They're also lazy and don't really care about themselves enough to make more than a salad every now and then. A home cooked meal for me growing up was either tacos, spaghetti, and tuna patties. Throughout high school it was frozen pizza, tacos, and french fries. They never bothered to really teach me anything. Cooking or otherwise. Almost everything we ate came with instructions. Anything else I attempted on my own. Except for a cousin who taught me to cook scrambled eggs. Both of my grandmothers had domestic skills and would let me help stir things and shit but neither really taught me anything either.

The excuse I sometimes see is poverty. We were white trash when I was a kid. We lived in trailer parks, used dish soap in the bath, were infested with roaches, mice, and lice. After they went to school and got better jobs we eventually bumped up to lower middle class. Though our eating habits remained the same. My parents, my mother especially, like to live beyond their means and the area that took the budget cut was usually food.

So my answer would be laziness, not thinking/caring about the future, things like that. Which you could also apply to math, reading, or learning in general. I think the common complaint I heard in math class was why do they need to learn skills they'll never use. That attitude might apply to somethings, but a lot of people can't even figure out what their 20% tip would be without a calculator.

>> No.5500650

Talking to my mother and a few other people has led me to conclude there was a weird generational gap. My grandmother learned all the homemaking skills as would be expected when she was a girl but she was a working mother when that time came around for her own daughters. She had no interest in teaching them, meaning it was easy for them to have no interest in learning. Home-Ec, along with the various Trade Educations, started to be killed off at this point.

My mom lamented this gap in her knowledge that become more and more clear when she had her own children and started trying to look after us. We were pretty darn white-trash in our eating habits because she had a hard time doing better.. but she eventually forced herself to do better and (most importantly) taught us kids that there were better options when we were still of a formative age. Now we can all cook basic things and handle produce and meat. Even more importantly we can all grasp recipes in that we know how to follow them and how to modify them when needed.

A lot of my peers had the same situations at home but never had that extra effort put in. Cooking will remain a lost art to them until they take those steps on their own.

I honestly don't think I've learned anything from my "white" side of the family. My grandma was basically a drunk/partier in her youth so my Mom had to take care of her siblings but can really only make spaghetti and meatloaf. My Aunt used to cook but she's also an alcoholic and only cooked before I was even born. My Native side that moved off the Rez and actually made something of themselves makes god-tier food though.

This is a serious issue. I blame womens liberation for telling women they dont have to be home makers anymore, while not successfully delivering the message that women that arent home makers should get jobs instead of sitting at home and doing nothing. The other error was everyone confusing, 'dont have to be homemakers anymore" with dont need to learn basic life skills.

My wife cant cook unless the thing comes out of a box with directions on it. And she has a college education.... The state of american women today is appauling and i blame feminism.

I grew up being taught how to cook and eventually learned basic shit for myself. I don't really understand why people glamorize not being able to cook. So many friends of mine in/out of college always brag about how bad they are and that they constantly have to get takeout. Honestly, I feel embarrassed for them. It's a basic life skill everyone should have. Everyone should know how to make a fried egg, fried rice, steam vegetables, or even cook a damn piece of meat. Even if you aren't a top tier master chef, you can at least master recipes.

I enjoy cooking for myself and others. I like to clean my apartment and have meals ready every day for myself and my partner. It's not hard to do and I don't think it takes a lot of time out of my day. These people "slaving" over stoves are either making ridiculously extravagant meals, or do 0 planning. Cooking involves a lot of standing around doing jack shit if you're oven cooking, baking, roasting, braising, etc. I use that time to fold laundry, do new loads, work, go to magic events, go to uni, and cosplay.

Like, I couldn't cook my food because the power was out and couldn't use the stove so I ate a box of cereal.

That is a "valid excuse" because it's not like you can say "well why didn't you just use the microwave?" or "why didn't you just use the stove anyways?"

ausfag here, i'vve been helping in the kitchen since i was 3. lately i haven't been cooking as much as i used to because of illness but i do miss it as it's a lot of fun. makes me sad to know there are people who will never experience the joy of a home-cooked meal they made themselves. It fills me with pride when I sit down to eat a meal I created from scratch and it tastes really good. my friends think i am mad for going to all that trouble to make my own food, i think they're mad for living off shitty ramen and microwave rubbish.

Because everything about her was fucking awesome? Maybe she is 10/10 and shares his weird obscure fetish that nobody else has. Maybe they get along 100% perfectly besides the food thing... many reasons, dude.

yeah me too. i was learning from a young age because my mother and my sister both enjoyed it. my sister worked as a chef from 15 years old and her love of cooking rubbed off on me. my mother takes cooking tips from me now we have internet at home, i yell at her for not following the recipes.

>Roomate's electric kettle breaks
>"Anon how will I boil water now?!"
>Shes never boiled water in a pot ever
>I literally had to show her
Watching her cook was so bizarre, it was like some McGyver ass shit, she'd boil water in the electric kettle and put ramen into it and everything

I can only assume she wasn't allowed to use the stove??

Not even gonna delve into her actual eating habits

she put ramen into the kettle, or she put ramen in a pot and poured the boiling water over it?
because the latter makes some sense, given it takes more electricity to boil a pot of water than a kettle, due to heat loss from the design

>> No.5503885

>>5503876
Ok well first off, naturally she put ranch on everything but she was really creative with it, tacos, pizza, steak, perogies basically any dinner you could imagine. But for the most part she just eats ramen, once a week she'll buy something frozen in bulk and eat nothing else breakfast lunch and dinner till she runs out. She did this with chicken strips, salmon and perogies that I know of. Shes always complaining about how shes so depressed about what she eats and I try to teach her stuff but she just plays dumb so that I end up doing everything myself.
I know theres a lot more outlandish stuff but I'm so used to it I dont even bat an eye anymore

She put it inside the kettle at first but when her kettle broke she started boiling water in a pot and pouring it onto the ramen (Its the kind youre suppossed to put into the boiling water) so I said why dont you just put it into the pot? and she said she didnt know she could (what?)

>they dissolved Home Ec classes before I was even in high school or junior high or middleschool

Not that I agree with this sentiment but I think a lot of that came from parental pressure under the guise of home-ec, shop, etc. detract from time better spent for college/career prep. You now have parents in a blind panic because they are worried their kindergartners are "falling behind' and their college opportunities are being limited or endangered. It's absurd, but there is at least a certain class or segment of society that actually believes and worries about this kind of shit.

Every meal my siblings and I were forced to help cook at least one side dish or something by my mom. As a young kid I hated it but I've learned to appreciate it as an older guy now. I live by myself and can make full delicious meals just by memory. it's excellent.
