I broke a tooth one one of these. Granted I did have a pretty big filling in the tooth to begin with.
I felt/heard something snap, thought it was the candy shell. Felt something hard in my mouth, thought it was an especially solid bit of the shell, so I spit it out.
Then I felt a weird texture on my tooth, I concluded it was a wrinkled bit of the peanut skin. After a minute of unsuccessfully trying to remove it, I figured out what had just happened.

Close. Hominy actually just refers to the way the corn has been prepared. In particular it means the corn has been nixtamalized (an ancient mesoamerican technique). The Spanish word for hominy is nixtamal.

The idea is that you take dried corn and boil it in limewater. This increases the nutritional value by causing bound niacin to be converted to free niacin. It also changes the color, flavor, texture, smell, taste, and makes it a whole lot easier to hull.

It's common for types of corn that aren't sweetcorn (like dent, flint, etc..) to be nixtamalized. I don't know if baked corn typically undergoes nixtamalization, but I'm pretty certain they don't use a sweetcorn (I can't imagine that would work or taste any good).
