The only difference between NYC pizza and the pizza place I go to in Central NJ is maybe the crust, and definitely the price. It's delicious.

Manhattan doesn't have mid-priced restaurants, slices are either 99c (or slightly better than 99c) or high-end (at which point its something else entirely).

Tri-state mid-tier pizza is my personal favorite but you have to go to an outer-borough or the burbs to get it. However, Brooklyn/Queens pizza is on-par with jersey pizza.

Once you get far enough north that the short growing season made it not worth leveling all the trees and draining wetlands for farmland, Mich/Wisc/Minn are amazingly beautiful. Even up to the early 20th century, southern Michigan was largely forested; the precursors to the interstates were paved with trees, and Grand Rapids MI became the US "furniture capital" as they hussled to find a use for all the trees they were clearing.

Why the hell would you go to DiFara and order pepperoni? And as for basil being haphazardly strewn about, Dom is the Jackson Pollack of pizza - everything on that pie should have been haphazardly strewn about. That's what you go there for.

I don't know if I'd call him overrated. He's the best in that area, hands down. Whether or not the place is worth a pilgrimage from another neighborhood is a judgment call. Last time I was there he was getting a little heavy with the olive oil.

I like Totonno's style better. But now plenty of places have brick ovens, so pizza pilgrimages are less of a big deal than they once were. It's pretty easy to get pizza close to top tier without even visiting an old schooler. Fucking 'Lil Frankie's turns out amazing pies, and they even deliver.

Got it. All you knew was slice joint pizza. If the low moisture cheese comes pre-shredded in a plastic bag pepperoni is great. But putting it on a pie made with fresh mozzarella just shits up the flavor of the cheese.

>Grimaldi's
Places like Grimaldi's and DiFara gained their fame when they were your only option other than slice joints. Compared to slice joints they were much better. But word got out that if you built a brick oven, made your own sauce and used proper cheese people would pay $20 for a medium size pizza tons of places jumped on that bandwagon. Many of these places are turning out "better" pies than the old schoolers, but they're fancier and pricey. They make money off their wine lists.

Good pizza has gentrified with the rest of the City. Those who have a problem with that can eat the 99 cent slices. I personally don't mind shelling out for the good stuff. I eat pizza rarely enough that I don't mind it being a splurge.

Here are some more lists.

These are the 2006-2007 findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by Morgan Quitno Press of hundreds of public school systems in all 50 states. States were graded on 21 factors, including student achievement and attendance, positive outcomes, strong student-teacher relationships and school district efficiency. The 2006 award measures states based on factors including expenditures for instruction, pupil-teacher ratios, high school graduation and dropout rates, and reading, writing and math proficiency.

Iowa used to be higher, but in 2005 they closed down the section 9 projects in Chicago and moved the families to central Iowa in an effort to give their children a chance at a better life. It failed horribly. Crime in Iowa skyrocketed, the educational standards feel to abysmal levels so the ghetto kids could keep up, and within 2 years over 80% of the males that moved to Iowa were incarcerated. Its actually a very touch topic with Iowans.
