Looking back on that post, I feel like it comes off as ungainly humorous, when really it's quite horrific.

I had a friend named Pat growing up whose family was proudly "Irish-American". He used to say really childish, babble type words like din-din and pee-pee for whatever reason. We and our mutual friends all attended the same grade school, and we began having sleep overs in the middle grades...I think 4th to start.

Anyway, we all used to be WWE fans and even watched early MMA stuff and played Mortal Kombat, Pit Fighter, and the like--this was the early 90s to mid to late 90s. Like most young boys, we began having wrestling and boxing matches.

Pat did not fare well, mostly because he was a fat, lurp that talked like a baby that had poor gross motor function and coordination. Also, he always stood up for himself and other, only singling himself out. What's to say? I remember our ringleader, Mike, used to put a pillowcase over Pat's head and strangle him, because Pat was claustrophobic. Or Mike would lock him in the closet until Pat shit his pants and he would be crying. Other highlights include Mike's older brother, Dan, shaving Pat's head and eyebrows while he slept, or Pat falling asleep on the couch at Mike's house, only to be tipped or thrown off the couch at 3 AM and told to sleep on the floor. It's all really ugly.

I remember when Pat's mom called my parents and our mutual friends' parents to tell them that they had found bruises on his body. Of course, Mike had to bring it up at school to shame him. Pat begin to shit his pants in grade-school and high school. Everyone thought that was funny too, but looking back on it, it was because of the abuse.

I don't think there's a lot of compunction, remorse, or sorrow in this post, but I assure you that I wish I had done something for him then. I think we used to laugh because we were afraid of what was happening, a sort of nervous "please make it stop" laughter.

Lately, I've been thinking of a "pay by weight" business model - have a buffet row in addition to a small house menu like this, let the folks take their pick, and wa la. Menu building might be hell, though.

It gets hate because reviewers built it up as the BEST THING EVAR!!1!, so some poor bastard drags his ass all the way to Midwood, then has to wait two hours in a pretty dingy restaurant for a delicious but somewhat expensive pie that resembles a Jackson Pollack painting as much as a pizza. He's left thinking, "Yeah, that was some great pizza, but not worth the ordeal it took to get it."

Dom is fairly hailed as a neighborhood genius. But those suggesting the place is worth a pilgrimage from outside the neighborhood do him a disservice. There's no way a one man show in a run down little neighborhood joint can live up to that kind of hype in a town where great pizza isn't very hard to find. Yes, he does top tier pizza. But so do at least 20 other places in town that are less idiosyncratic and more convenient.

I'm still a fan though. I just wouldn't make a special trip to Midwood to go there.
