Good morning /ck/. I'm looking at getting the annual challenge rolling in February, kind of same Schedule as last year.

So this thread is for planning ahead :

Got a round theme suggestion? (and really, go crazy n this one, I know that was the major sticking point of last year's post-mortem)

Want rules to be changed?

Want to volunteer to offer a prize?

Want to help behind the scenes?

Let me know!

hey bubbles!

I'm happy to supply a prize pack for one of the rounds same as last year

breakfast theme as one of the opening rounds is a good starting point as everyone can do breakfast

fruit theme is nice and general too

I think stickying the contest thread was a nice idea so people don't have to bump it constantly and it gives high visibility to what is basically an annual event at this point

Okay, well, I'm just going to post the ideas I've managed to write down so far, because I don't have time tonight for any more and I'm afraid this thread is going to drop off before I make a more comprehensive list. ANYWAY, these were just brainstorming ideas, they may or may not be appealing, IDK, If I have more ideas later, I'll email you, if you still have the same email address! :)

Famous Chef Round: Pick (or it could be a rolling round) a famous chef, living or dead, and recreate one of their signature dishes (or just one of their really good dishes). This could offer an opportunity to show off some technique, plus peak and interest in a classical chef, or could be used to troll the challenge with dishes made by Food Network idiots, you know….

Roll for Cuisine Round: as implied, roll for a set list of cuisines, for example, Peruvian, Ethiopian, Burmese, Lithuanian, Transylvanian, Guatemalan, etc.etc. etc.

Barbecue Round, with the stipulation that cooking it inside the house is fine and won’t be penalized, since a lot of people don’t have outdoor bbq situations.

Children’s Party Round: Make a creative spread for a children’s party (I actually think this could be a chance to be very creative and deceptively more difficult than people would think) and it’s a silly theme to throw in there.

Surf and Turf Round (self explanatory) make your best surf and turf dish

/ck/ Potluck Round: make a creative dish to bring to a /ck/ potluck

The Blob Round (lol, working title): A round where your dish must include one of the following: jello, aspic, or agar agar.

Food in the Arts Round: make a dish based on a food or meal referenced in either a book, a movie, or an album (this could be narrowed down to just one if necessary), plus explain why you chose that particular book/album/movie

>more simple rounds that could be part of the first few open rounds:
Breakfast
Fish and Seafood
Meatloaf Round
Appetizer Round
Rice (or Bean) Round

More seriously, please include a bread baking round. It's a major skill that is underrepresented on /ck/ in my opinion.

You might even preselect the recipe and judge based on visual quality of the loaf produced. This would put everyone on an equal footing, more or less, so that we don't get bedazzled by a pumpkin spice glutinous Japanese tentacle porn bouffant creation over some newb's simple but perfectly done white bread.

A cake decorating round might also be fun.

BTW, I'm writing as an observer, as my kitchen currently consists of one hotplate and a fridge.

I was thinking of joining you tripfags this year instead of pissing all over your parade.

>>6065445
I know you're just spit-balling, but
Barbecue Round = Picnic Round (last year)
Surf & Turf is a bit vague, you could take almost any of the rounds and cook surf & turf if you wanted.
I like the jello/aspic.

>>6065655
One vote against bread.
Decorating cake is neither cooking nor baking.

It would be nice if the rounds were food that the contributors can and will eat. As in, I would never be able to (or want to) eat a whole cake, so I wouldn't waste the money or time making one. Something to keep in mind.

Just my 2 cents.

I have 4 ideas so far, maybe an ingredient like tofu, not many people have much experience with it, secondly, maybe a veg only dish, as someone who has meat in every meal, this would be very hard for myself and probably most other contestants, 3rdly, an alcohol round, where some alcohol must be used in a dish. Rules wise :
Last year I went with the cummulative score to determine the winner. Do we want to keep that (I was trying to reward participating in all rounds since it is a ton of work). Or do we want to revert to the last round being sudden death?

This has been done before (with the added stipulation that it came from a convenience store)

The results were sadly what you'd expect: turns out you can't do very much with $10 at 7/11.

It was a fun one time experience, but when you have basic meringues winning a round, it probably isn't the best for a culinary challenge competition.

To be clear, I'm not trying to knock on BubbleBurst - I still think he deserved to win by making the best of what was available within the constraints. I just think that it's kind of a bad measure in general for who is the best, especially if you use it at a later round.

Hey OP, just a suggestion for timing of each round - could each round cover 2 weekends, eg. for this December the rounds (as in time to post your entries) would be:

Round 1: Dec 6 - Dec 14
Round 2: Dec 20 - Dec 28

The short rounds (and I think a change in schedule in one of the early rounds) really screwed me out of participating beyond round 1 - between full time job and family life and no full weekend to work with I was just physically not able to plan and prepare.

But if it's just me and it would stretch the Challenge out too much then oh well, I'll try if I can but probably I'll just watch you have fun.

Bone-in IS too broad IMO

I like the idea of a "cold" round, but like you said, It's a bit vague and I can see it leading to ... what you said happened. Someone suggested aspic, so that could rein it in. Cold soup maybe. Something that is normally served hot... Yeah, it's pretty vague, but we are just spit-balling and sound-boarding.

Tailgate/game night/smoker/BBQ is all kinda vague, but I think BB can take the ideas and condense them into specific rounds. As an observer, I liked the "picnic" round and I feel like it encompassed most of the ideas while not being "American". And I suggested "game night food" partly because I'm interested to see what other parts of my country and what other countries eat while sitting around watching a game. I'm not even sports. I don't even know what sport season it is. Pretty sure it has a ball in it though. GO TEAM FROM MY AREA! SPORTS!

doable, for most people.
BUT pretty much impossible to detect cheating.

With myself as reference, i know i could do it, but it wouldn't be cheap (whilst living on low budget, too) and easy (not that it should be to easy)
That is under the assumption that i am at my little student dormright in teh center of a metropolitan area.
f i am at my families place, on the countryside, i can get everything cheap, and with way better selection.
So i guess everyone could do it, but it might end up being pretty unfair.
also i guess not everyone wants to disclose where they live, what would be necesary to at least somehow check if the rules where followed

pretty much the same hesitations I had. Good to hear them from outside my head.

I have a suggestion for a round.

Local specialties.

Pretty much make your version of what your city/state/province etc is famous for.

It's the visceral and rather immediate reaction that made me laugh. Not the cuisine woes.

Chili isnt about presentation, it was never meant to be pretty. Kind of like Indian food. Its all about your meat and method. I did fancy up my presentation when I made one last year and it made me feel like a faggot. Also, if you use fucking beans and ground beef, no prize for you. If you use bourbon and/or some sort of smoked meat in your recipe I might hook it up with an enhanced prize.

In case you aren't entirely sure, I'll second that anon.

Just imagine what kind of nightmare verifying every little thing would be when some anon tries to argue, "I'm from that area and I can't find etc."...

Cholula here, I got a really great job between the last challenge and now and thus would be happy to offer some prizes. I'd like to compete as well, but not sure if I'll be able to with time constraints plus my new place has the shittiest stove/induction range in existence so...

Anyway I'm not super creative so can't really think of any good ideas for rounds. I thought maybe we could do like a US regional round, like everyone has to roll and make a dish based off of a certain region of the US (Southern, New England, etc) but that might not be fair to folks from other countries.

I'm a fan of slow cookers, so a slow cooker round would be pretty cool, though I'm sure there are people who don't have one so that wouldn't really be fair.

Honestly I never had a real issue with any of the rounds unless they required a big budget, which is no longer an issue for me.

I really enjoyed the color round last year, that was my favorite. I was lucky to get orange though, lol. Pic related

Pye, btw, I still use your brioche bun vert probably once a month.

I'd like to add too for anyone thinking about participating but not too sure, it really is fun and at least for me a very big learning experience. I still use a lot of the recipes other people posted. Just don't let yourself get stressed... heh. It can be really intimidating with some of the amazing cooks we have on this board, but it really pushes you to stretch your boundaries and for me, to learn new techniques and recipes.

And Bubble as always thank you for taking your time to do this, you are so much more patient than I am with the trolls, etc. You rock!
