I'm cool with it. I don't draw some arbitrary line in the sand between pets and livestock. Dog, cat, bunny, horse - it's all good to me. Anything that would be on the menu at a Cantonese restaurant I'd be willing to try. Even jellyfish (pic related)

Dog eating itself is alright, but the market tends to be shady and the livestock poorly treated. But then again this is China, so I doubt this is an issue exclusive for dogs.

>Yes, some places do treat dogs very poorly before butchering them. Inhumane conditions for livestock has happen in many places around the world.
This is partially cultural. In our culture the word "animal" comes from the Latin animalis, which means "having breath". Breath has been associated with spirit or life force in our culture (god breathed life into Adam). So there's a cultural undercurrent of animals having some kind of spirit, reflected in phrases like "all god's creatures."

This gives us a greater propensity to be concerned about animal welfare than the Chinese. The Chinese word for animals translates to "moving things". They do not see a spiritual aspect to animals. Slaughtering them just means they're no longer moving, and have become meat. Concern over the animal's welfare extends little further than it's value as meat.

>> No.6195743

I don't like it cuz I love dogs. Brings a tear to the eye seeing the caged ones. I just think that dogs shouldn't be used like that and I think the way they treat them is cruel. But as I understand its cheaper meat and its china so they don't really have a huge choice. I just wish it was at least better regulated where people wouldn't steal pets and shit. You would think pigs would be much more popular as the meat content is much higher and they reproduce at a higher rate maybe no one has brought them into the area in high enough number though.

Confucianism and Taoism have more pull than Buddhism in China. And while Western religion and philosophy have generally taken a stance against animals having anything resembling a soul ask any pet owner their opinion on the matter and you'll hear differently. People cry reading the Rainbow Bridge copypasta.

My argument was a summation of Fuchsia Dunlop's in her memoir "Sichuan Pepper and Shark Fin Soup". She was the first Westerner to attend a mainland Chinese cooking school, and went on at length about the differences in attitudes with regard to slaughtering animals. She makes a compelling case for why Westerners are more empathetic toward animals than the Chinese, especially in regard to animal suffering. A much better job than I did in my post.

I think it's just much easier to explain it by the fact China is overcrowded, poor and with a bunch of human rights infringement to begin with. The rich people feel they deserve it because they're rich and the poor don't give a shit because they're poor. Take any christian country in Sub-saharan Africa or South America that is shitty and overcrowded and I bet the animal rights situation is shitty as well.

Meanwhile in the west most people who care so much about animal rights are middle class people who can afford doing that.

That's a lotta bullshit. The reason Chinese people don't have much empathy for animals is because their socio-economic conditions do not let most of them have a pet, and their only interactions with animals are through their meat. If you look back into history people respected their cows and horses because they were constantly interacting with them and even nowadays calling someone an old cow is a sign of friendship and respect

Yeah, I'm in Taiwan, and a few weeks ago there was some video that hit Liveleak of a woman dragging the police into the back of a restaurant and screaming that that was *her* dog they had just butchered.

Everyone who posted on that forum about it was screaming furious, it was sad that they don't respect local culture.

Although the restaurant probably shouldn't have carved up that lady's dog. But considering that most of the people around here just feed a street dog and leave it running around crapping on the sidewalks, and call it "theirs", I have a difficult time finding fault with the restaurant for grabbing one of those. :-/

The fundamental difference between pigs and dogs is that we have been using dogs as companions, tools and guardians for a long, long time. Pigs have been used for slaughtering and what, finding truffles? I don't want to eat something that shares a species with an animal that I have an emotional connection to. Its the same reason why I won't eat a horse but I will eat a cow. There are some species where we share a mutually beneficial relationship. This is a factor as well. Farmers tend not to be very sentimental about killing animals, even beyond livestock. Too many cats on the farm? Next litter of kittens gets tied in a bag with a rock and tossed in the river. Four generations ago this was commonplace in the US. Today, where most Americans' only interactions with animals are with their pets we'd consider anyone who would do such a thing a monster. But we have to do a kind of doublethink when we eat bacon, because we sure as fuck don't want to think about pigs screaming in the slaughterhouse after we donated to the locan animal shelter this year. Fortunately bacon comes in vacuum sealed plastic, so we don't have to think about where it comes from if we don't want to.

The Chinese have no such sentiment because most of them were farmers until much more recently. They know how sausage is made, and don't have a problem with it.

I think the real problem people have with the chinese eating dogs, is that its more upclose and personal. The animal killing isnt done in some neatly tucked away factory, away from everyone. Theres absolutely no difference between eating a dog and a pig, or a cow, or a chicken. Every animal can be raised as a pet and more or less they are all "smart". Ideally, im up for eating anything and everything, but I think people should be raising and killing their own food, just to be in tune with the bigger picture.
