I live in a mixed SEA neighbourhood in Murrica.

It's mostly Indo but with a fair number of Viet, Lao, Khmer and Hmong. Also Cantonese, if you can count them as SEA. There are a few Mexicans, too.

A lot of people here sell food illegally out of their homes or, in the warmer months, from their back garden grills. One Mexican lady sells trashcan tamales when it's warm out. She rolls a shopping trolley about with an insulated trashcan filled with tamales and shouts out "TAMMMMMALLLLLEEEEEEEEEEES! TAMMMMMALLLLLEEEEEEEEEEES!" as she goes about the area. Veg ones are three for $1, chicken or pork two for $1 and beef are a buck each.

One storefront has a cart out front with a Mexican-style griddle built in from which they sell pork chops, sautéed cactus pads, rice, beans and corn tortillas. No other options. For five bucks, you get two chops, a bit of cactus, a bunch of rice with some bean gravy on it and 3-5 tortillas (I think it's however many the dude happens to grab when he hands you the foam plate).

Khmer sell papaya salad and sticky rice year round out of their homes and Khmer-style beef saté at the park or from their back gardens in the summer.

Lao and Hmong sell their version of papaya salad and sticky rice, too, as well as Lao-style grilled chicken. Additionally, the Hmong sell various pickles, too. Like the Cambodians, they also sell from the park.

Indo sell the most diverse stuff, and only from their homes. Everything from cow lip salad to noodle-stuffed deep-fried tofu to corn fritters and various types of saté (pork, chicken, beef, lamb and goat meats, various offals and other stuff, too).

The Viet are the only ones to run legitimate businesses with licenses and health inspections in this area, though they're the minority. They sell from storefronts rather than from their homes or gardens. You can get various Viet-style take-away foods in this area.

I don't eat much street vendor food because there aren't many of them unless you are in a large city where most people aren't driving themselves everywhere. The last time I had one was in Irvine, CA after a Def Leppard/KISS concert. It was like midnight and we were starving and there was a Paki with his son and a hot dog cart. Could barely understand him and the fucker wanted $5 per dog. We said fuck it and got one each anyway.

It was hardly any different from a normal hot dog but god damn something about the quick and gritty way a brown man cooks food on the street made it taste soooo good. Street food is mostly about atmosphere, I think.
