Pros: Animals take a lot of energy to raise because they're one step higher on the food chain (takes 10x calories of feed to make 1x calorie of meat).

Cons: Harder to balance diet with only plant proteins, humans evolved as omnivores. Also animal feed can be grown cheaply or be byproducts of food processing (like spent bourbon mash), switching to veganism when you can afford meat makes vegetables more expensive for people who can't afford meat.

that's 10x calories in shit humans can't eat. the bulk of it comes from soya plants, which humans can only eat a tiny bit of, so the recycling of the rest of the plant into beef makes logical sense.

Individual market choices can't solve the systematic destruction of earth. The notion that not eating animal produce is a solution to the problem under our system is ludicrous considering how much agriculture has contributed to the deforestation in South America and Asia. Veganism is nothing more but a way to feel good, like going to Bono's "save the earth or something" concert or donating to NGOs like those PSAs full of celebritities. Veganism is no solution, Veganism is being co-opted and is becoming part of the problem.

That's not how veganism works.
Have you seen that picture of a cow with all the different parts labeled for all the products they're used in? It's titled "There's no such thing as a vegan."
I always had a problem with that picture because "vegan" doesn't mean a life completely devoid off animal suffering/animal products. It means a life attempting your best to minimise animal suffering/using animal products.
Ingrid Newkunt, the mother of all cunty vegans, uses animal products. It doesn't make her a hypocrite because she needs those products in order to stay alive. She chooses to use those products, despite the source and the symbolism involved in making that choise.

There's even some arguments about vegans who keep "companion animals" (that's what the self-righteous fuckwads call pets). If a vegan chooses to have a hen as a companion animal, she's going to lay eggs no matter what happens. Would it breaking veg to eat these eggs? The argument takes two sides, typically:
>yes, because the egg is symbolic of encouraging animal suffering
and
>no, because ignoring the potential foodstuffs is symbolic of ambivalence towards human suffering
I know a handful of vegans who keep hens. So long as the hen isn't discarded once she stops being useful (IE once whatever the avian version of menopause would be called sets in) and is cared for and loved until her eventual death, many (I'd guess most, actually) vegans wouldn't be against it.

Ive had it out with vegans before about a lot of points. It doesnt take long in an argument to learn that we basically only eat meat for ease of access and preference generally in the US and other developed countries. (Spoken like a vegan but Im not one, never even tried because I dont care about animals well being at all).

The only times I could get vegans to cede, were in cases of saving human lives and substantially enhancing them with nutrients they could get from animal products.

In modern day its really not ever necessary to eat meats or animal products, However I did have a friend who was hardcore vegan opt out after having difficulty getting proper proteins and iron. I didn't go vegan for health reasons, I should mention. I'd be way too much of a pussy to raise and slaugter animals, so I dot see why I should eat something that I wouldn't feel comfortable producing. I also know that I can live fine without meat and animal products, for the most part, so taste alone seems like a silly reason to justify it. I do tend to think all those gluten free, raw vegan, fruititarians, etc are some brand of crazy masochist, though. I personally eat loads of gluten (2oz has like 40 grams of protein), added oils, etc. I also have something of meat fatigue from eating pretty much nothing but meat for two years, and I love beans and nuts more than any other food, so it's not particularly hard for me. The idea that killing animals is wrong is stupid. Why is it wrong to kill an animal, but just fine to kill a plant? Plants are living things too, and they have as much a right to live as animals. What gives us the right to decide that a cow is more important than an onion? We have to kill things in order to live. That's the way life on this planet works.

Vegans always end up inconveniencing other people around them with their special dietary requests.

An onion can't experience negative emotions or pain.
And meat doesn't have to be in our diet, it can be in our diet. We can digest it but it doesn't absolutely have to be consumed.

And the natural argument is just silly. Getting shrink wrapped meats, preserved lunch meats isn't natural either but you're going to do it anyway.

>It's pretty funny and something that I noticed when I was a little kid, all of the network news, so called news, all put the same stories on at the same times and go to commercials at the same time.

Haha, oh wow. As someone who's worked in broadcast, let me tell you why you're stupid. The reason all the stories go on "at the same time" is because they put the stories that are most recent or most important at the beginning of the show. For example, if there's some sort of huge disaster, that will be at the top of the program. If there's a big election, that will be the top story. The less important stories, like sports and human interest pieces, go at the end of the show. All news shows do this, because that's what viewers want: the most important news first.

The reason the commercials run at the same time is that the shows all have roughly the same amount of commercial time. They've figured that dividing the program up just so is the best way to keep viewers' attention while still getting maximum ad views. They'll do big news up front, then break, weather and some more news, break, and so on. This is not a practice unique to news, either. Many other shows also share similar formats. For example, children's shows are divided into 11-minute segments with a break in between.

None of this is a big conspiracy. None of this is indicative of any sort of bias. You're paranoid over absolutely nothing.

So? It's still a living thing. There are people who can't experience pain, either. Does that mean it's okay to kill and eat them? If we genetically modified cows to not feel pain or emotions, would it be fine to eat those?

There are just some nutrients you can't get properly from plant sources without using synthesized chemicals that your body doesn't absorb properly. Creatine is a good example.

Many areas of the world aren't suitable for growing plants.

If we tried to feed the world on only vegetables and fruits, we'd run into even worse fertilizer problems. Animals are great at turning grass/corn/shit into nutrients.

Animals are delicious.

Whole butter is healthier than margarine.

>Veganism is unnatural. Humans are omnivorous animals. Meat is supposed to be in our diet.

Have to post this pic every time I see this argument. The word omnivore seems to confuse people. All it means is that you're able to get nutrients from either plant or animal sources of food. It doesn't mean you're perfectly suited to both types of food or that you need to consume both in order to be healthy. It's purely a matter of food availability and the benefit of being able to survive on nearly anything if need be. When survival isn't an issue, as in most 1st world countries, we can choose freely what foods we eat.

>The idea that killing animals is wrong is stupid. Why is it wrong to kill an animal, but just fine to kill a plant? Plants are living things too

Without a central nervous system or any form of sentience, most people would recognize that plants don't suffer nearly to the same degree that an animal (including humans) do. Picture a human in a coma. Their body still works, they can be kept alive in that state, but the aren't conscious. As far as we can tell, a plant is like a comatose person who's lived in a coma from birth til death. Surely it would be the better choice to eat something with no sentience than a sentient being that feels pain and fear.

No one thinks this. We have "fangs" (or canine teeth, as people with brains like to call them) to better help us process meat. Our bodies evolved to eat meat. It is natural for us to eat meat. Avoiding meat because of some ideology is unnatural.

The way this guy thinks that people equate tooth size with prey size is fucking moronic. Our canines are small, so the biggest animal we should eat is a rat? What the fuck is he talking about? There is no one on Earth who thinks like that.

I don't think you finished reading that segment. That section of the article is basically saying that canines aren't a determinant of meat intake. Hell, herbivorous animals develop canines too, and human ancestors had canines before meat became a significant part of our diet. They're generally useful teeth to have for many reasons.

>. Our bodies evolved to eat meat. It is natural for us to eat meat. Avoiding meat because of some ideology is unnatural.

We definitely evolved to be able to eat meat, and you could say it's natural to do so in the sense that everything that happens in the natural world is natural, but the question is should we do it? Are we really suited to meat to the point where eating it on purpose when we have other food choices is still a good idea?

Research into diet tells us that at the very least, having a low consumption of meat is beneficial to health, while avoiding it completely seems even better. This may be because while we evolved to be able to obtain nutrients from meat, thus allowing us to survive to reproduce age in environments lacking adequate plant foods, we didn't evolve the way a wolf/dog did in a way that makes it an ideal food source for living a long, healthy life.

One example is that you can feed a dog any amount of saturated fat or cholesterol and not see the cholesterol levels in their blood rise. They evolved to be able to handle those burdens offered by meat consumption, in order to prevent heart disease. This isn't the case in humans, in which these things do raise our blood levels of cholesterol, with heart disease killing half of all men and women. In fact the editor of the American Journal of Cardiology considers humans herbivores mainly on that basis

A cursory glance through a list of countries by birthrates seems to support my idea, but I'll have to look it through more.

This presents the following possible conclusion: no matter how many people in the so-called first world become vegan, there are going to be many, many more from Middle Eastern, Eastern European and South American countries to outnumber them, making their entire struggle an exercise in futility and vanity as well as wholly moot.
Never mind the fact that promoting veganism to people as blinded and religious as Middle Easterners tend to be would be literal blasphemy, contradicting the word of god (according to them).
