James May beat him in a shepherds pie cooking competition, what does that tell you?

He does really drill into his audience that to be a good at cooking, you require diligence, passion, care, anger, brutal self-criticism, presence of mind and the fucking lamb sauce.

First of all, I'm going to maintain a neutral point of view with this post. Second:

>It's all an act

Someone came into one of his restaurants in the late 90s and secretly filmed him. There was a big scandal and some television crew wanted to film him.

Gordon Ramsay let them in.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_asNbdQa6U

You can see hidden footage in the beginning but you can also see that he's acted like this for a long time.

How you feel about his management style is a completely different matter. He is who he is. But it's a completely different matter to say that it's all an act. This is how he runs his restaurants and it's been known by everyone who works with him. He's very passionate about what he does, but he also has free reign to rage at his employees. It's just his thing.

>>6720444

Gordon Ramsay is literally exempt from criticism. Anytime you criticize him, you're responded with people accusing you of being insecure ramen-cookers. These same people probably aren't that good at cooking themselves. It's insane and it's hard to have a serious discussion about this guy, even though his skills and recipes are out in the open for people to judge.

>> No.6720845

>>6720839

I think that's how he described it. His childhood sounded shitty and his mentors were loud and abrasive. Don't know why he's allowed himself to become that persona as well, though.

I'm all for passion and being strict, it's just over-the-top when you get to the point where you're insulting employees in the heat of the moment (but not allowing them to do it back) and you're essentially kicking them around. I've heard people say that this is how it's done at restaurants. then they go on to tell me they've never worked at a restaurant....

>> No.6720847

>>6720845

Yeah it's safe to say a lot of the people who defend him up and down are just really into his shows and aren't much in the position to criticize someone. When their responses consist of, "Well, let's see you do better" or "Well he's richer and more popular than you are" it's hard to take it seriously in the context of a discussion.

It's why I stay out of these things. Nobody wants to look at his recipes and tell me what's wrong and nobody wants to look at criticism and counter it so both sides tend to fall short when it comes to Gordon Ramsay.

>> No.6720848

I think the persona has a lot to do with it. He defo causes very extreme responses.

I'll say this, he does know about the business. The advice he provides in the UK Kitchen Nightmares is always bang on, if not repetitive:

Cook local
Don't over complicate
Customers first
Don't let your ego get in the way
Work clean

His recent business failings (Aus, NY) likely stem from his not following his own advice.

"If you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen" is a VERY apt phrase to describe what goes in in there, but it's give and take; if you dish, you better be able to take, else you're a bitch and can go get a nice desk job.

Kitchens are why I have learned to have a thick skin, and why I look at hugbox shit with disgust. Ramsay does it wrong; not letting his employees come back at him makes him a pussy of the highest order afraid to get served his own medicine. He'd have to work in his own kitchens else be chased out because he's probably got no wit about him any more to answer call-outs and criticisms since he stifles them in his restaurants.

I feel differently. I wish I was infertile and I wish my husband did not want children. Don't have the maternal instincts yet I guess.

I can definitely see the charm in having children, but I cannot help but constantly think of the worst case scenario. Il get ugly, arguments with husband about how to raise the children, husband not loving me anymore, having bad relationships with the children, the children turning out to be little ungrateful shits, the fear of my life spiraling out of control and leaving me in a pit of depression with no way out. I've noticed that but I don't really mind his own twists on things. Too many people do classic and simple recipes and I think he wants to show how he does things instead of just being some basic cooking teacher.

Learned so much neat shit from him. Just his twist on scrambled eggs got him a lot of rave from new cooks.
