Our mass-produced chocolates are better than American mass-produced chocolates but artisinal chocolates from either side of the pond are about as good as those from the other, with some USican-made artisinal chocolates beating ours by a hair.

>>6814699
It is in no way an exaggeration. Your mass-produced sweets in general, not just chocolate, aren't very good. You guys shine with salty foods. American crisps/chips are way better than ours, with the exception that you lack pea-flavoured crisps as well as bell-pepper-flavoured ones, too. Those are my two absolute favourites.

Well, there's one sweets company in Ohio that makes delicious gummi bears and Jelly Belly is fantastic, but generally, your gummi/jelly sweets are pretty awful.
Here's a list of all non-chocolate sweets I've tried here and didn't like:
Airheads, saltwater taffy, candy corn, Charleston Chew, Cherry Bombs. Chuckles, Cow Tales, Cry Babies/Warheads, , Lemonheads, American licorice, Hot Tamales, Atomic Fireballs, Good And Plenty, Mary Janes, Root Beer Barrels, Jujubes/Jujyfruits, Mike and Ike, Peeps, Laffy Taffy, Cream Savers, butterscotch (though I like the butterscotch-flavoured instant puffing mix), candy buttons, Necco wafers, Nik L Nips, NIPS, Peanut Chews, Pez, Pixy Stix, Pop Rocks, Razzles, buttermints/after-dinner mints/starlight mints, Ring Pop, Sour Patch/Sour Patch Kids, Tootsies/Tootsie Rolls/Tootsie Pop, Push Pop, and Twizzlers/Red Vines.

Ones I've liked: Blow Pop, Dubble Bubble, jawbreakers, Runts, Bit O Honey, Jolly Rancher, Life Savers, Gummi Savers, Nerds, Sweetarts/Smarties, Skittles, Dum Dums and Starburst.

They act like that because, lamentably, the only American chocolate easily available anywhere, even in America, is the mass-produced shit. That stuff is 2/10 (Hershey's) - 5/10 (Mars/Ghirardelli).

Your artisinal chocolates, however, range from shitniggerwhatareyoudoing/10 (some shitty mint chocolate from Brooklyn or Philadelphia I tried made from "local mint" that tasted like a vaguely chocolaty vacant car park after it's rained, the sort with greenery growing between the cracks in the footpath) to 11/10 (some bean-to-bar chocolate from DC; IIRC, it's just one guy doing it all himself).

Its butyric acid, its found in ALL DAIRY.
>milk chocolate
>dairy

The process is a trade secret, but experts speculate that the milk is partially lipolyzed, producing butyric acid, which stabilizes the milk from further fermentation. This compound gives the product a particular sour, "tangy" taste, to which the US public has become accustomed, to the point that other manufacturers often add butyric acid to their milk chocolates.

Nice try.

It doesn't matter if it was made for a British market, it's proof that America more than has the ability to produce such chocolate. There are no secrets left in chocolate making. It's now about what our consumers are used to being marketed and product availability.

I live near chicago and you can get fine chocolate at any corner store. You want even finer chocolate? Look online and you can have some shipped to you the next day for cheap since it's so near. I imagine it's the same in every major city.

America is fuck huge and there are people starting and closing businesses every day. People take their craft seriously or they market cheap shit so well that they succeed anyway.

Get a wider perspective.

None of that contradicts the fact that Mars bought the British brand Galaxy and used the name of some little US ice cream company they'd bought out to market it in the US. It's not that hard to understand.

Of course if you STILL disagree you've got the whole internet out there to find a dove chocolate wrapper or advert or basically anything to prove that dove chocolate was around before 1991.

They're pretty fucking delightful, actually.
And! I found pea snacks at Aldi yesterday here in America. I bought a sack. It's... not as good. These were undersalted pea-flour and rice-flour puffs, just cheese puffs, just pea/rice instead of corn-based. Once I salted them myself at home, they were not bad.

And I'm pretty sure bell pepper is the most popular flavour in all of Europe. You can get them from Spain to Russia (and I've gotten packets of bell pepper crisps in many countries between the two).

If ever you get the chance to, give either a try.

>>6820466

All we have are cheese, cheese and onion, cheese and pepper, salt/plain, salt and pepper, bell pepper, peas, rosemary, spicy (they're not actually that spicy) and that's it. In the next country over, they have a lot more American-style flavours, such as sour cream and onion, "Texas" barbecue and "Chinese" five-spice barbecue.

We don't dislike Hershey's the company. We dislike Hershey's the company's chocolate. Or, rather, their milk chocolate. Their dark chocolate is inexplicably okay. I think the reason there's such a huge renaissance in the US for Americans loving dark chocolate and scoffing at people who don't is directly caused by the abysmally horrible quality of the milk chocolate here, particularly Hershey's chocolate.
Anyway, Hershey's dark chocolate is cheap and my go-to for making drinking chocolate in the colder months. I put it into my rotary grater, run it through and mix it into a simmering 1:1 mix of half-and-half and whole milk (so quarter-and-three-quarters? 1:1:2 cream:milk:milk = 1:3 cream:milk, no?). Our milk chocolate all tastes that way because that's what most consumers here like. It has to do with the early dominance of the Hershey company in the American chocolate market. The other companies that produce milk chocolate purposefully imitate the taste produced by the Hershey process. As people have pointed out up thread, when American companies produce chocolate for foreign markets Europeans don't find those objectionable.

Food preference isn't objective, and a lot of it comes from expectation and familiarity. American milk chocolate tastes the way it does because it doesn't sell as well when they try something different, that's all.
