So I bought a set of Baccarat stainless steel knives, on the box it states they are dishwasher safe.

I put them in the dishwasher, and boom, they are covered in spots of rust.

Is there anything I can do, ck?

Lots of people recommend acid. Just soak the knife with lemon juice or vinegar and it loosens it up enough to scrub right off.

Why not? Dishes and pots take lots of movement to wash and dry. Knives just take two strokes to wash and dry.

If you absolutely want to rape your knives buy some blackened ones or with colored coating.

I've never seen a knife actually visibly discolor in the dishwasher, though. Might be our washer tablets are less hardcore.
They get dull, eventually, but I always assumed that was more or less inevitable when using a knife for its intended purpose of cutting things.

>> No.7182030

>>7181973
Knives aren't dishes.
Also, putting knives in dishwasher damages them as it dulls them (banging them around a bit, as well as water repeatedly drying on the edge) and increasing corrosion (as seen in the OP).

Rust on stainless steel.
There are three ways this can happen:
It's not stainless steel.
Or they were next to chlorine.
Or it's rust from another metal object (flying rust).

Stainless steel rusts, it's just more resistant.

If you put a stainless knife in the dishwasher though, those aggressive as fuck tablets and soaps will do a number on it.

This. Putting knives in the dishwasher is bad because of the harsh chemicals and abrasives in dishwasher detergent. That shit will eat away at the finish of a lot of knives and pots and pans.

Basically all my cutlery is made of stainless steel, though. Hell, the interior of the dishwasher is some steel alloy or other. It's clearly possible to make stainless steel that actually does not stain.
It's possible that its too soft or brittle to make knives for actual cutting, though. I don't know how the steel industry works.

>> No.7182553

>It's clearly possible to make stainless steel that actually does not stain.
Sure, at the expense of its edge holding ability
Stainless steel used for decent knives is quite a bit less stainless than stainless steel used for the insides of dishwashers. I'm not going to comment on whether op's knives are "decent" but a knife made out of dishwasher material is going to be shit at being a knife.

Who the fuck even puts their cooking knives in the dishwasher? It takes like 10 seconds to wash, rinse, and dry. Then again I find dishwashers in general to be ridiculous unless you just had a big dinner party or something.

Exact same brand I was going to recommend. I've found it's good for getting of rust / tarnish. It is mildly abrasive like Ajax, Comet, and the like, so, be gentle.

Machinist here, I'd say those knives have insufficient nickel content, thus the rust.

Stick a magnet on them, if it sticks they're carbon steel knives, as stainless steel is non-magnetic.

Machinists clearly know as much about metallurgy as loggers know about plant biology.

Any stainless used in typical kitchen knives will survive dish washing without corrosion. If a knife rusts it indicated a bad batch of steel or improper heat treatment.
