Yep. That was normal growing up. I don't eat them that way very often anymore; I prefer other methods of preparation to boiled.

This is simply the only way to eat an extra soft boiled egg, one that is so soft boiled that peeling the shell without making a mess is impossible. Hence, eat it out of the shell. Kind of like eating avocado or kiwi fruit out of their own hemisphere "bowls" when they are so ripe and soft that peeling would be a mess. I've been trying to soft boil eggs as close to the raw egg as possible (to prevent oxidized cholesterol in the yolk) and this method of serving them seems made for that.

Hence, I dont own egg cups, and just use my shot glasses. funny enough, a good friend of mine does it the other way round. He has some egg cups and uses tose as shot glasses as needed.

Thanks for the link. It is definitely the fastest way I've seen a soft boiled egg leave the shell. I steam my soft boiled eggs for 7 minutes. Sometimes if take them out sooner than that the whites are too soft and still cling to the shell. If I cut my time even shorter, down to 4-5 minutes, I think I can get that egg to drop out without clinging to the shell. Fascinating, can't wait to try this tomorrow morning.

Just tried it, via steaming instead of boiling, doesn't work. But I learned what my mistake was. Steamed it for 4 minutes at full blast and the whites of course will solidify and cling to the shell at that temperature. What I need to do, as per the video on half-boiled eggs, is cook at less than full on steam, but that won't work with steam as steam is either full on or nought. I will have to change up my preference for steaming and immerse my eggs like in the video in a pot of water immediately after it has reached full blast and heat has been cut off. Will try that tomorrow. The search for the tool-less soft-boiled egg method continues! Some one mentioned, this is simply an in-shell poached egg. Exactly what it is.

Okay so I tried the "Malaysian" half-boiled egg method, and it still results in whites stuck to the shell that you must spoon out. I thought I'd done it wrong, so I went back to the videos on youtube to watch these demonstrations again. I then realized that I was not watching carefully enough the first time. Because on 2nd viewing I see that they too had lots of white stuck in the shell that they later scooped out, just like me. It was not the 100% clean egg drop that I originally thought I'd seen. So fuck that method, as I can do better with my steamed soft-boiled egg which retains the entire orb of egg white which contains the runny yolk inside, albeit with more time spent peeling the shell, which I can live with if that means I have a plate of white orbs instead of a chaos of white-yellow sludge. It was worth doing however, as I'd never scraped the insides of an egg shell with a spoon before, a new valuable experience.
