Sup /ck/, I have a trial to see if I can handle a dishwashing job this coming Thursday, do any of you have any tips for someone who hasn't done it before?

You've never washed dishes before? Use hot water and soap.

If washing dishes doesn't work out for you, you can come mow my lawn.

-As the Anon above me said, learn to speak the language of whatever the most common minority is where you are (Spanish, Arabic, Ghetto Ebonics, etc.).
-If you don't smoke, congrats, now you do
-Don't do drugs even when you're offered them
-You use the dishwasher by pulling it down
-If you don't know how to wash a dish by hand you really shouldn't be applying for a job as a dishwasher
-If you're closing, add at least an hour to the length of every shift to calculate when you'll actually be leaving
-Don't expect compensation for this extra hour
-Expect to eat more shit from the chef than anyone else in the kitchen
-If the establishment you're working at is plebeian enough to not supply you with a uniform, bring a change of clothes for each shift, and possibly several.

Get the shit off the plates quick and put it through the plate wash. Remember it's mostly for sanitizing plates, not for food debris and you'll have to clean it more frequently.
Make sure the porter dudes scrape the plates or at least attempt to before leaving them.

this dude knows what's up the water will be hotter than what is comfortable to start with and if you have to clean cook-line stuff the chemicals are harsh

I pray you don't have an external grease trap or that's going to smell like hot vomit and leak on the floor.

Hope you do Ok friend.

Oh, and two more things.

>Make sure to become bros with the line cooks as quickly as possible or else you'll constantly be eating shit from them as well as the chef
>A sad reality is that employees in the food service industry are more expendable than street sweepers, and dishwashers are the absolute most expendable employees in the industry. If you plan on washing dishes long term you WILLL be fired at some point. It's not an issue because landing a dishwashing job at a different restaurant is easy as fuck, but be prepared for non-existent job security wherever you go.

Run silverware twice.
Assume everything the kitchen brings you is hot.
Don't let anyone leave a knife in your sink.
Wash in batches. Plates, cups, pans, bowls, etc.
Prioritize. Do the biggest batches first.

That takes more skill though, he should just sudoku himself if he can't wash dishes

I'm sure there's an assembly line in China somewhere where he can stick the same sticker on various boxes for 16 hours straight. Assuming you don't fall asleep I can't imagine even a kid with downs syndroms not being able to do it.

dishwashing at most places is pretty laid back, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't show some hustle.
biggest tip I can give you is to make sure shit is clean before you put it away.

while the dishwasher is the most expendable, finding one who does the job quickly and well is rare, that's why turnover is so high. if you've got a work ethic and can keep up with the bants then you're golden

Fuck that shit. I did only one 12 hour day of that shit. They wanted my to do 14 hours and 6 days a week.

>have any tips for someone who hasn't done it before?

Get a better job. That's what I did. I had dreams about washing dishes for a full week after that shit.

Underrated posts. I work front of house and I can not agree more on the language tip. Even a few basic phrases is extremely helpful.
