About $300. I splurged on the Eel since its Saturday. Normally I would just get a small meat dish and eat it with rice I cook myself. Sides are also cheep you can get like a 1 gallon jug of daicon radish for like $3. Overall a dish similar to this cost me $1.50.

"NikuJaga" Home cooking. It is not offered at the restaurant. It is rare in pubs.
There is a theory that Irish stew is prototype. Truth is unknown.
Simmered beef and potatoes. Other materials are different for every family, there is no fixed form.
There is a legend that women who can cook delicious NikuJaga can marry. Typical home cooking in Japan.

Sukiyaki

Meat, vegetables, mushrooms, noodles and tofu cooked in a shallow pan in about a centimeter of a sauce (soy, sugar, and mirin).

Once cooked, you transfer the cooked food to a small bowl with a lightly beaten raw egg, and then you eat the eggy, soft food.

There's certainly different regional preparations of it, either different meats, different sauce ingredients or a lack or sauce altogether, and different vegetables and whatnot. Some people use fish sauce, some people just use water. Some people forego the egg.

the dish itself is like chow mein in the us, it went from unheard of to super-popular after ww2 and is now cooked and eaten in a way that has little to do with whatever chinese recipe it may have been based on, so it's hard to call it either chinese or local.

incidentally, you can probably trace a fair amount of american """chinese""" to japanese """chinese""". things like whether gyoza is a side or an entree, or when you add egg while making fried rice, were adaptions that ended up getting either exported to or reinvented in the us.

Chowmein is a bad example because it literally means fried noodles in chinese. That's as generic a name as you can possible get - there is no original "recipe" for it.

Also another odd distinction is that although Gyoza is 餃子, Gyoza tend to be fried (though it can refer to both?), the Chinese tend to use 餃子 to refer to the non-fried versions and 锅贴 (literally stick-to-pan or "potsticker") to refer to the fried ones.

I went to Tokyo for the first time in December last year, and I ate fucking fast food 90% of the time. I went to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima and all I fucking ate was McDonalds, Burger King, and Wendy's. It wasn't until the last week in Japan that I was in Tokyo and tried out some ramen places. God do I fucking regret that decision. Still managed to lose weight cause of all the walking tho.

Anyways, I'm going back to Tokyo soon. Please recommend me some good food that I should eat while I'm there. I ate at a yakiniku, it was really nice, definitely gonna try it again.

I don't know, anon. I guess I was just scared of Japanese food at the time. I'm not really into seafood, and didn't realize just how much more than seafood cuisine Japan had to offer until my last week there, and by then it was already too late to try much.

Do some nomihodai or whatever shit if you can Nihongo or have some Jap friends to latch onto. All you can drink for a couple hours with a couple of courses of food for pretty competitive price. Then you can stumble around and feel free to vomit outside a police box like a real Japanese faggot.

There is a shop where I eat a lot. But it is not a difference in taste, but due to convenience.
I have never felt the difference in taste at other stores.
I believe freshness burger is a reliable chain.

As far as Japan's taste is concerned, I am very pleased if you try Katsu-don, or Oyako-don, at a soba restaurant in a private business.
The Japanese love hamburgers very much. Along with that, I also love the fast food of ancient Japanese rice ball.

Not that anon, but if anyone is interested they should look up shojin ryori. Its buddhist cuisine, served at temples and stuff, I think mostly in Kyoto. Good for inspiration. Also, Asian grocers have a lot of imitation meat / seafood that isnt common in western countries, and some of its pretty decent.

American here. I visited in August and I can attest that this was absolutely delicious. My brother and I went there on our first night, and it was a damn good choice.

They have you grind sesame seeds into a fine powder first, then you dip the pork into a sauce then into the sesame powder, and eat it with the pickled cabbage. I didn't know breaded pork could taste that good.

Only difficulty is that it's somewhat hard to find being on the 14th floor and all. But that is also a good thing, since you wont get many retarded foreigners ruining the environment.
