She had a 26 yr old brother who didn't have his, and they had a 29 yr old brother, the only one with a license, who would drive them everywhere (they lived at home and the dad would drive them too).
She said it was too expensive to go to drivers ed and get it done, which is only like $120.
I made her feel bad about being lazy and she finally got it. But then her 29 yr old brother got picked up on some pedo charges and now she's the one driving her other brother around, who still doesn't have his license.

I live in a very large city with an international airport, and everyone here drives. We don't even have a subway system to speak of. Many major US cities have plenty of space to expand outwards, and typically it's only in the most commercial areas at the very center of the city where driving is actually time-prohibitive compared to the relative comfort and flexibility of being able to leave and arrive whenever and exactly where you need to be. For example, driving from the front door of your 3-bed room house with a yard means you walk 15 feet to get to your transportation. In other scenarios, you're forced to use a cab (expensive), or public transit which is not necessarily on your city block. Then you have to manage timing of trains or buses, and also deal with the walk time and distance from your actual destination compared to the public transit stop.

I'm not the guy you're replying to, but in many US states you don't have to take the practical portion of the driving exam *IF* you have a certificiate showing you passed a state-approved Driver's Ed class with a driving exam. You still have to take the exam, it's just that it's part of your driver's ed class rather than something you take at the DMV.

It certainly works that way in Texas. I remember doing that both for a normal driver's license when I was 16 and for a motorcycle license I got in my 20's. You bring your certificate from a state-accredited driving/riding school to the DMV and that counts for the "practical exam".

Yes good goy, keep falling for the suburban meme. You don't want to live within walking or biking distance of any essential services because that's dangerous. Stay safe in your secluded neighborhoods, specifically placed away from everything else so that you have no other choice but to drive. Keep telling yourself that you love driving through city traffic or hundreds of miles of boring highways or flatland, because getting anywhere without a car is too hard :'(

Again, no. I work in one of the largest office buildings in Manhattan. It's predominately architects, design firms, photography studios and fashion. Everyday there are HORDES of us (and by us I mean the people working office jobs, not the janitors) walking to station at 16th/14th and 8th or taking the shuttles to Port Authority/GCS. How to get a license as an adult:

1. Make appointment for earliest available date at DMV (3-4 weeks). Or wait in line for approximately 3-4 hours.

2. Provide social security card and birth certificate and turn in permit application. $40

3. Take permit test. [Test includes questions about rules of the road, speed limits and safety rules]

4. Come back at a later date to take driving test. (You can bribe to pass this). [1 critical error will be an instant fail]

I think you get 4 tries but you have to pay to retake the driving test.

You do not need any drivers Ed or any school certificates to get a license if you are 18.

>> No.9655698

>>9655630
so why do so many illegals and spics have licenses then?

and in any case, at least it's not quebec:

1. Register for an accreddited driving school at full cost to you. Maximum cost is 800 CAD.

2. Do theoretical studies at driving school for about one full year, with one or two night a weeks, depending on the school's schedule and teaching style.

3. Provide social proof of residence in Quebec and therefore also Canada, and also your Social Insurance Number, and proof from the driving school

4. Take permit written test.

5. Begin practical training on year 2 at the same driving school you first signed up for. Or, take on a new 800 dollar contract if you feel like it or if your school doesn't have enough cars to study with. (The car will probably be a shitty automatic FWD shitbox from 1999)

6. About 18 months after you started, once you are done driving school, you may now take the practical test. (You cannot bribe to pass this and need to drive the equivalent of Rallycross down Pikes Peak because Quebec roads are garbage and are pretty euro-style windy and full of aggressive lunatics.) [failure to speak fluent french will be an instant fail]

7. If you pass, you now have a Probationary License. You cannot drink at all when driving and anything above 0 BAC will result in instant license seizure, and you only get 4 Demerit Points (a single speeding ticket is already 3, a parking ticket or similar routine driving misconduct is usually 2), and this state lasts for two years.

Quebec answered the "can't drive; too many lunatics on the road already" problem by making it incredibly difficult to become a new driver

Hand free driving means you can talk on your phone and voice text which doesn't get rid of the distraction at all
>>driving is treated as a right not a privilege
>Literally only boomers think this.
When you turn 18 all you need to do is go to the DMV, take a 15 minute course and practical, and you get your license. That's as close to a right as you can get.
>>most states have zero vehicle inspections because 'muh big gov meddling'
>Literally illegal and you will get pulled over immediately for even one day of outdated inspection stickers.
You have 30 days after your registration expires to get safety inspected. Learn the law asshole.
>Do you believe everything you read on the internet?
Does anyone?

I guess I do live in a good state, but I am originally from England. I find that American infrastructure is only slightly worse than it is there. At least on the east and west coasts, most of the Northeast, and certain parts of the central and western regions.

They cost more like $75, and you have to pass a driving test at the very least. For anyone under 18 the process also requires certification from a driver's ed course and a written (or computerized) test or two. I don't know where the bribery aspect comes from mentioned in this thread. If your local DMV does this, you really need to report it.

Hands-free driving? Literally what is that? Self driving cars? Do you mean hands free calling and texting? If so, it does get allow you to use both hands on the wheel and keep your eyes on the road.

As for the inspection law, it probably differs between most states. Here where I live, you can be pulled over the second it is out of date. That is the law. All registered vehicles, motorcycles & trailers are required to pass an annual inspection, and all must be registered.

Anon, it's the same shit in germany. Ever year they act as if it's the first snow fall in centuries. And don't get me started on gypsies and niggers stealing shit from you if it's sardine crowded or you dare to fall asleep.

It isn't even cheaper, it's just kind of the only way to get to work on time due to our mediveal cities.

Riding in your suit to work, sweating like a big in the slautherhouse in the summer, lloking like a wet dog in the fall and freezing your balls of before falling into brown shit-snow with no-snow-chains in winter.

The only people biking to work are those not having a real work.

Can you actually get good food there? I don't need meme cuisine but I want something more than sports bar takeout.
