10199098 No.10199098 [Reply] [Original]

I was in Costco yesterday and saw they had some of the new batches of Johnnie Walker Green on offer, so I picked up a bottle for $65.00 CDN. By comparison a 750ml (24oz.) bottle of JW black is around 45.00 where I live in Alberta.

It's nice. Not super spicy or peaty, but not too mellow and delicate either.

I finished off a bottle of Lagavulin 16 earlier in the year, and I found by the end the peatiness had lost some of its magic, so this is a nice easy drinking change.

JW Blue isn’t terrible, but it’s price point makes or breaks its worth. My liquor store carries it at $160/bottle, which isn’t too bad. If you spend over $200 for it, you’re a stupid asshole. There are so many better whiskies at that level, and I’m not even taking about the meme single malt that is Macallan.

Today I picked up Tomatin 14, and I already finished 1/4 of the bottle. It’s an incredibly smooth and flavorful scotch that goes down much easier than I expected.

It's delicious. With a lot of cheap whiskys with little character I feel some kind of need to have several drinks. With Laphroaig I'm perfectly content sipping a single one and then putting away the bottle.
It has a lot of character and you can spend a lot of time swishing it around in your mouth appreciating it.
I drink it neat but there's nothing wrong with taking it with a little bit of water.
It's famously VERY peaty but it's not JUST that either. There are some subtleties to it, especially the Quarter Cask, if you take your time with it. That splash of water might help with that.
I keep a bottle of 10 and Quarter Cask in the house at all times.

It's not for everybody of course; you have to like a very peaty whisky obviously, and it's not something you get drunk on either.
I can't imagine having enough Laphroaig in one sitting to get drunk. I doubt that would even be enjoyable.

99% sure Turborg and Carlsberg come from the same tank. And of course the two best selling mass produced beers are boring piss. They are sour, yeah. Not a fan myself.

I don't know what you like and I'm not as big into beer as I am whisky so I don't have many real suggestions other than try some local brews.
I like the Mosaic IPA from Albani. Until recently I lived pretty much next door to that brewery so I got it fresh as well. You don't want an IPA that's been sitting on a shelf for a year.
Ceres have a few good fairly strong ones.
Pic related is amazing but I don't know if you're into drinking enough of those to get drunk. Might be a bit heavy for that.
I tried the Brutalis today and would NOT recommend it. Didn't taste as strong as you might expect from a 7.7% vol. beer but it had a weird aftertaste almost like rubber. It will get you drunk, though.
Had a Fynsk Forår after that. With elderflower in it. It's tasty and inoffensive. A light Summery beer I'd probably recommend to people who want to drink beer but don't really like it. Certainly a nice contrast to the boring sourness of a Tuborg.
Giraf, both red and black, are strong beers that taste good but don't have much subtlety to them.

I'm afraid that's all I can think of right now.

I dont care about taste, thats the point. Liquor isn't meant to be smooth, so there is no point in buying good liquor because all you get is something that costs a whole hell of a lot more and is a bit smoother. I polished off a bottle of 18-year laphroaig with my friend and our professor once, it was easy to drink but trader joes $20 single-malt gets me just as drunk for 1/6 the price.

Well, there you go. I put regular unleaded in my car because I don't give enough of a fuck, you don't spend more than $20 on a fifth of liquor for the same reason. I love tasting new whiskies, I find some delicious and an experience in themselves, separate from the intoxication. If you're drinking just to get fucked up, by all means, keep buying cheap shit.

Looking at the responses already, I don't know if I can provide you with a satisfactory answer.

Part of it is pretension I suppose, part is that I can afford it, and part is that more expensive alcohols usually have less of the dregs from distillation that make hangovers that much worse. Also I don't usually drink with the goal to get legit drunk anymore, so I want to get something that I can enjoy, as opposed to something to get blasted on.

Can I really trust a whiskey that goes for 13€ a bottle (aprrox $16)? I don't expect something that "beats" a 50€ sctoch single malt, but that price point sounds like it would be at JW red /JD levels of rotgut.

Had some of my bottle last night. Not 'smoky' at all if you have any palate for scotch. Little heat, even. Smooth, light, but delicious and an interesting, almost tropical inflection of sweetness. Would recommend it I guess, depends on your taste.
