>“Yes, I was a super picky eater when I was little,” Brad admits over email. “My three main food groups were pastas (+ mac ’n’ cheese), hot dogs and chicken nuggets. I’d also have a milkshake before bed.”

>“Seriously, dude?” Ally asked after watching Brad eat buttered noodles off a paper plate for the fourth night in a row. She’s slowly expanded his culinary horizons since then, helping him realize the foods he “didn’t like” were based on opinions he’d formed as a 7-year-old. “Just try it,” became her mantra, and more often than not, he’d actually like it—to his own surprise. Two nights ago Brad even made pasta from scratch and washed it down with a glass of organic chocolate soy milk, and he now buys organic pizza bagels from Whole Foods.

You'd think one day in your long, brutal fifty-six years you'd just be walking down the street and letting your mind drift and you'd think

>holy fuck something is seriously wrong with me

and you'd realize that yes, people eat and love all those different foods in the grocery store, and that you don't. And you'd get all fucked up worrying about how you only eat like three kinds of food while most people enjoy dozens, if not hundreds, of different foods. And then you'd probably try pretty hard to find out what the fuck was going on with all of it.

There's only one explanation for this thought process not happening: you are literally retarded.

When I was a kid, if I didn't want to eat what was for dinner, I just didn't eat that night. It sorted me out real quick.

This. My mom was a picky eater when she was young. So when my bro was young and didn't like what she made for dinner she'd indulge him - let him have a hot dog instead. He's morbidly obese now.

I seriously think it has to do with growing up in a white household. My white mom would make really shit food so I assumed the food she made wasn't good, regardless of who made it.

When I would eat with my dad (hispanic), he would give me food and when I asked what it was, he would tell me "steak." Since I love steak, I believed him and I would eat everything. It helped the food I ate with him was actually delicious.

White people (at least in the past) were pretty shit at making food. Little to no spice and just bland in taste. This was a common trend with kids I grew up with as well. The white kids would order out more while the minorities would do home cooked meals that I would go out of my way to attend.

When he first started, I invited him out with some coworkers. He asked the waitress for his own basket of dinner rolls because it was the only food he wanted after looking at the menu. He eats poptarts and water for lunch every single day. I saw him shopping once and he only bought chips, cookies, and several types of bread (Bagels, english muffins, white bread loaves). The Irish were a subjugated people for a while. And those who arrived in America mostly came here because it was risk the passage across the Western Ocean or starve to death. Even then you might starve to death on the Coffin Ship. The culture of subjugated people tends to lean toward great music and violence because they live under extreme situations. But it only takes a generation or two of food insecurity to trash a cuisine. You see what the Depression and WWII did to British and American cuisine. Or what the first half of the 20th Century did to German cuisine. The Irish went through centuries of that kind of insecurity under the plantation system. Of course their cuisine is utter shit. And those wretched who arrived on our eastern shores (Burgerland) brought their shit taste with them, and passed it down through their large families. When you meet someone on the East Coast with man-baby taste it's a pretty safe bet there are shamrocks in their bloodline.

I think some of the problem too is that poorer families are less likely to try branching out when buying food.
Why buy food you aren't sure that your family will enjoy? If it comes out wrong, or just doesn't taste good, that's money that could have been spent on something familiar.
I've grown up with this, and have a hard time shaking that mentality, especially when eating out.

I have a niece like that. I take her out to eat at immigrant places and order some dishes. She asks about the particulars of each and I tell her I have no idea. I ordered them to find out. She was aghast. But what if you don't like it? That's why I ordered a bunch of dishes for the table. But I understand some folks can't deal with that. They want their own plate that's their own meal instead of just passing everything around the table. I really don't like eating out with people like that.

Children's palettes are not fully developed yet that is why, they're literally different than an adults
There's also this thing where a mothers pregnancy cravings affect the child's palette and preferential flavours in the womb, so if you mom binged on broccoli and pickled onions you'll probably like those at a younger age than if she binged on cake and ice cream

Sounds like my brother in law. His diet almost solely consists of meat and potatoes. The closest he gets to fruit/veggies is that he will drink apple juice on occasion.

It has to do with taste buds. Kids have more and thus tastes are way stronger, so it's probably just too overwhelming for them. Bitters are worst, salty and sweet are more easily handled and why some people can just dump that shit on whatever they eat.
Kids also have higher sense of smell.
Humans are fucking weird.

I think I'm going to kill myself

People think I'm just being a bitch or are acting too good for their food when in reality eating most things is a mental and physical battle with everything fighting against me. I guess to normal people it'd be like if you tried to eat literal shit out of a toilet and your entire being fights against that.

I'm not lying by the way . I was recently pushed to try ranch DIP and it left me in a cold sweat and shaking .

It was ok. But that was just dip and I am way worse around real food.

My life is pretty pathetic

I moved in with my GF's family 2 years ago, and I agree- older white people have terrible taste in food. I used to cook every single dish from Alton Brown's Good Eats, but now I'm forced to stick with simple easy to cook foods that don't make weird smells.

Here are the foods I had to say goodbye to because it weirds out older white people:

- roasted peppers (makes the house uninhabitable, even if the peppers are for Chile Rellenos and therefore not spicy at all)
- curry (they hate curry the most of any other ethnic food)
- beans FROM SCRATCH in a dutch oven
- bacon (I can't have delicious food in the fridge or it "tempts" them into overeating. Did I mention everybody's overweight?)
- real butter, LARD (these things don't make you fat. I eat a lot of butter and lard and I'm athletic! Then again I'm not white, so maybe fat is just genetic or maybe just "in your head".)
- garlic + soysauce and asian-style food in general.

Nowadays, I ONLY eat chicken salad sandwiches in the morning and burgers in the afternoon, followed by bananas/fruit before bed. Why? Because I hate cooking in a white household, and these are the only things that taste delicious while requiring no prep time at all.

I can't have blocks of cheese in the fridge either because fat white people WILL STRAIGHT UP EAT MY WHOLE ENTIRE GIANT BLOCK OF CHEESE BY ITSELF, COLD, FROM THE FRIDGE, LITTLE BY LITTLE UNTIL IT'S ALL GONE. Seriously, wtf white people? WHy can't you let me enjoy my cheese slowly at my own pace? Why do you have to eat cheese by itself???

Sorry to tripple post, but I forgot one thing: I can't leave a pint of ice cream in the freezer for more than a week before the family deciders that it's abandoned and therefore up for grabs.

Who eats a whole pint of ice cream in one go? I can only do spoonfuls at a time, occasionally. Wtf white people?

It depends how old they are
My grandmothers are both excellent cooks though they both cook fairly traditional English dishes (lots of savoury stuff like pies and beef) but it's all very rich and tasty, even one grandmother experiments a bit with curry and came make some really nice stuff

My mother on the other had was a pretty terrible cook until recent years since she's put an effort into learning (after I've already moved out)
