What's the best tequila?

What's the best tequila under $30?

What's the best mixed drink with tequila?

Be wary of any tequila that is not actually 100% tequila. Most cheap offerings are so called mixtos, meaning only a small part is actual tequila from agave, with addition of: grain spirit, cane sugar, colorings, flavours, godknowswhatelse that all cause a massive fucking hangover wanting you to swear off tequila till the end of times.
As with most dark spirits, aging makes for a (usually) better product. When shopping, look for labels that have 100% agave tequila on them. Of these you will find various maturations, starting with "blanco/plata" which basically translates to a white spirit, barely if at all aged, rough and not at all pleasant. If at all possible go with at least a "reposado" (somewhat aged, mellowed, less in your face), good for all-around drinking, shots, cocktails, etc. If you want something more smooth and mellow to sip, go with "anejo" (aged even longer).

Forgo the lime/salt or orange/cinnamon rituals as they both factor well into the hangover and are mostly just memes and made up marketing ploys.

Patron has become the standard by now. But I find 1800 is much smoother and more enjoyable. Casamigos and Don Julio are stronger and will put you on your ass faster. Almost all of these can be found under $40.

I usuallly take tequila as a shot. Can’t recommend a cocktail with it.

the first time I drank tequila (jose cuervo gold), I drank it straight and noticed it has a huge rise of bitterness at the start of the sip

El Jimador, Cimmaron, Cazadores, and Arrete are all good choices. Only get tequilas that are 100% blue Weber agave because that's the species that tequila is made from. Blanco's are aged less but legally cannot have any additional ingredients besides the agave. Good advice.

I can't believe only _one_ person talked about Squirt soda and tequila. It's natural grapefruit and fizzy, and quite a popular locals way to consume tequila. Tequila sunrise is delicious.

And, absolutely no one mentioned the real way to serve tequila isn't with salt and lime, but a jigger of lime juice and a jigger of sangrita. One of the most amazing things you can do at a part is whirl up a pitcher full of homemade sangrita, and lay out 5 or so choices of tequila and let people enjoy the chaser of the sangrita. Use really fresh pulpy orange juice about 50%, and to a blender combine that with all the fixings of pico de gallo, fresh tomatoes or tomato juice, chili peppers, lime, onion. Hit it with a dash of worchestershire if you're a bloody mary fan (or make bloody marias). Sangrita is this sweet and piquant flavor, almost a fresh gazpacho freshness. TDF. I like resposados for the smoothness and what I think is more cactus flavor. If I feel spendy, my favorite smooth one is Sammy Hagar's Cabo Wabo reposado for many years now, but there are some excellent things available in recent years, just go by your preference.

A really good margarita has a bit of grand marnier and all fresh citrus juices. Worth making right. And, really nothing better.

Unless you're exclusively eating frozen slop, you're being massively ripped off on all your spices and seasonings by only going to white grocery stores

bad punctuation on above post, I don't properly know what you mean and you could fix that with a comma

daiquiris use rum, and though one can argue that light rum is mostly vodka with more sugar, any recommendation to drink vodka tics me off unless the person receiving the recommendation is an alcoholic or it's flavored vodka for a girlie

I like 1800's Reposado best of any Reposado I've had, I usually like to buy Anejo but actually have been surprised at the depth in the 1800 Reposado

We don't usually buy very expensive liquors.

That's not how alcohol works.
It's all made from different plant matter that's what makes rum rum and not vodka or gin just because they're all clear.

With tequila, the biggest tell in terms of quality is if its 100 agave or not. The mixed stuff is vile and offers the mother of all hangovers.

In terms of finding stuff for a good price Mexican stores always have tequila and at a very good price.

the Seleccion 1146 Anejo is the best tequila I've ever had, incredibly smooth

Cazadores is probably the best value. It's also probably the most popular with Mexican Americans. I have no idea what regular or 1st gen Mexicans drink, though.
