McDonalds doesn't put on the wall menu the "All American Meal" which is basically the low cost adult version of a simple burger, fries of a kids meal, but also has the larger drink in lieu of the toy. They'll let you buy a toy without purchasing a kids meal too. I often buy a toy for my dog, if it's a plushy. For teachers, there is the value of tossing those kids toys into the classroom "treasure chest" for rewards. They're tested to be safe for kids, so no risk. Often they are what are known in the business world as "loss leader" items, meaning they are nice enough to be considered worth more than the meal, because it draws you into a place more often where you spend outside of the one item.
Last toy I got, about 2 weeks ago (for my cavalier king charles spaniel) was a small bengal tiger plus toy, and it had no eyeballs that can be dangerously chewed off, no grain stuffing. Also it was National Geographic themed and came with a playing card and a link to an educational website with games, educational activities and other stuff I didn't look at, but accessible via phone through the code. Employee gave it to me for free when I inquired about buying it.

It was around the begining of 1992.. Shortly after the super mario bros 3 toys around the time of the movie hook and the movie toys..

I was nugget man in those days.. Loved my sweet and sour sauce (all they had back then was sweet and sour and barbeque) and my orange drink. Before that i was a cheeseburger man...

After this we moved on to taco bell.. And there i usually got 2 regular bean burritos and 1 regular taco.

I remember back when I was a kid a happy meal came in a plastic box shaped like some sort of car or boat. In the box with your meal you'd get a small sheet of stickers, you'd decorate the car shaped box with the stickers and that was your toy!

In the "All-American meal" which includes a drink, something that is only $2 and far less than a happy meal, you get a burger, fries AND a large drink, items that would cost you more a la carte if you didn't know the meal existed, no matter what is on sale. If you buy a kid's meal, you get a 6oz cup that isn't enough to wash down your food, even if you are drinking water in that cup. You don't have to finish the large drink, but it could prevent you from dying on a dry french fry while in your car.
