I don't know that he's wrong; a lot of my friends just drink for the sake of getting drunk, so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of drinkers don't care for the flavor but just enjoy the buzz.
I personally hate the taste of beer but I like some alcoholic drinks, mostly if they're sweet or sour.
I know; all anecdotes. But if beer weren't a forbidden fruit or "rite of passage" sort of thing, I wonder if how many folks would start drinking in the first place, let alone continue, for social reasons or intoxication.
