I enjoy watching his vids for a few reasons.

First, he's pretty fucking fluent in Chinese and pays attention to the customs of all the places he goes to, whether he speaks the language or not. Everyone he interacts with, as a result, is super friendly and show appreciation.

Second, he fits the profile for a high functioning sociopath. I don't know if it's just the unnerving nature of his on-camera persona, but it's just terrifying and fascinating at the same time. He reminds me of a friend on campus that everyone loved, and was very genial and kind in general. He was essentially a Quaker, and was very intelligent, well-read, but there was something off about him. Maybe it was the way he asked to room with me, or the way his eyes were when he smiled. On the last night before he was going home for the summer, he asked if he could talk with me. He told me that he didn't want to kill anyone or hurt people, but that if he did he wouldn't 'feel' anything. He said he understood how other people thought and felt emotions, and was able to imitate them, but always felt lonely. He compared it to a person in a foreign country who could learn certain phrases to get certain results but never knowing what the words actually meant. When I asked him why he was telling me this, he said it was because I was the only one who'd understand.

I don't know what he's up to these days, but I hope he's doing well.

Oh, sorry. He spent an exceptional amount of time trying to explain how he was against the idea of hurting or killing, and I don't know if you'll get it, but I could understand from his point of view. He explained it as aversion to abruptly ending something with a history, like burning a book that's still being written. I think I still have the notebook where I jotted down notes somewhere (yeah, he said he didn't give a shit since 'no one would believe you')

At that point I'd spent about a year rooming with him so I had come to understand how he thought. I'm not a betting man but I don't think he'd kill anyone, based on his logic, personal philosophy, and general aversion to risk.

He made a video awhile back about how he manages to fund his trips and its pretty enlightening, it basically boils down to this:

-his blog; on it he has his favorite hotels and hotspots in thailand that gives him a cut of the profits if you reserve a spot through him
-his blog; by doing a great deal of passionate food writing and really flush out his writing portfolios, he managed to get freelance writing gigs at big newspaper publishers
-he wrote a number of comprehensive travel guides that he gets royalty for
-his youtube channel views
-donations

dude has worked hard to get 2 million subs, his on-camera persona could use a bit more work but you can't fault the guy on his content.
