So I’ve lived in both the Midwest and Southwest now and have been on extended vacation to the east coast. From this I can confirm that the West coast is shit tier in terms of good beer. It took me a while to warm up to it (because it’s practically the only beer sold out here) but IPAs just cannot hold a candle to a solid lager, wheat beer, or stout. The three just mentioned are filling and actually delicious. IPAs are just overly bitter and pretentious. Hell, Stone even has a beer called “arrogant bastard” that says on the bottle “you will not like this beer, it is for a refined palate”. Come on man, seriously? Go to a brewery in the Midwest or east and you’ll have plenty of actually delicious options - including some IPAs - to try. Out in the West all people give a shit about is pushing their overhopped, high alcohol content beer. What the hell is wrong with people out here? Session IPAs are good, but that’s as far as I’ll go into actually relaxing with a beer.

Bonus rant:
I’ll extend this observation to the west coast and more specifically California in general. It fucking sucks out here. Everything is super expensive, shit beer, super fucking hot every day, roaches if not very attentive pest control, absolutely insane drivers, and shithole cities like LA. At the risk of sounding like an assblasted conservative “hurr durr commiefornia suck!!1!1” I will tell you that I’m liberal and not memeing. I need to get the fuck out of this state.

Arrogant Bastard Ale is like 25 years old. I agree the marketing is pretty cheesy but they were trying to make a name for themselves when the majority of Americans only drank macrolagers or cheap pale ales.

Cleveland is a great beer city with a thriving borderline oversaturated market. I'll drink dortmunders until the day I die.

True, but that’s one beer. I’m talking the entirety of this state focuses waaaaay too much on IPAs. For some reason it’s become the western US palate.

>>10984057
I don’t doubt it. I’m from Illinois and was never disappointed with Midwest beers.

Here in Connecticut there's new breweries opening every day and they all start out with a bunch of IPAs. They're popular, they tend to review well and all the hops can cover up off-tastes from the brewing process. I know it's the case in neighboring states, as well. Once breweries tend to mature they tend to branch out with different styles.

I just want to go to a brewery that has something other than a massive selection of IPAs. I went to Harpoon in Boston and it was pretty awesome. I guess I can’t blame new breweries for wanting a product that is going to taste decent and sell

I'll go to bat for Russian River and Pliny at the very least. They have a fantastic selection of belgians and sours. Even if we're only talking about Stone's selection of IPAs, there have been more than a few releases in the past 3 years of reasonably moderate ABV juicy, approachable, non-pine-resin beers. Anchor Steam has a lovely selection of ales and lagers as well

I went to Stone in Escondido and they had a 10 year anniversary stout at the time that was absolutely amazing. I like a few of their beers but I’m really missing a solid lager or wheat beer. Are the breweries you just mentioned in SoCal?

sours/goses were catching on for a while last year and they suddenly all went away. i was excited to finally put an end to the IPA meme. sours/farmhouses/saisons/goses are infinitely more complex and interesting than any other brew.

Unfortunately Russian River and Anchor Steam are both in NorCal, RR is in Santa Rosa in Sonoma county and Anchor Steam is in SF. If you're ever up that way they're both worth a trip for sure.

Dude I know. I live in NYC and there's a great brewery here called Transmitter that focuses exclusively on the tarter side of things. Most of the other local places will do a sour every once in a while but like you said I wish it was a bigger thing

I like tasting sour beers and sour things in general, but I don’t think I could drink an entire glass of a sour beer. It’s just too much for me.

Based off of the pic you posted I'm getting this picture in my head that you really didn't look very far or overturn any stones to find good ipas before you made this post shitting on them. I have said before to my friends and I will die by what I said, and that is Stone makes hop bombs. Across their spectrum they say their beers are different but they all just taste too damn hoppy. Here in the central valley to the central coast there are so many dope breweries you probably have never heard of that make wonderful even tempered ipas and certainly don't focus on just those. LA and San Diego are great places to find great beer but you can't just stop when you see a sign off the freeway. I got love for the big dogs down there but you need to search beyond Ballast point or stone to get to the small breweries where all the gems are at

Pic is one of my most recent hauls I cared to snap a pic of

I’ve had the peanutbutter milk stout.

The thing I’m having a real problem with is I don’t want to drive an hour or two to a microbrewery to find a gem every time I want to drink beer. The grocery store has little outside of IPAs and the liquor stores near me are practically the same. I’m going to try BevMo within the next week to see if they have anything else. This is why from my perspective it seems like a regional thing. I don’t think all IPAs are disgusting, but I do think it’s it’s inferior to some of the other beers which just taste good. Why did I have to spend months becoming accustomed to the taste of an IPA when there are other more delicious options available more frequently everywhere else in the states? It seems unnecessary to me.

I feel ya. I'm pretty damn lucky to be in Bakersfield. We have certain gas stations that commit to stocking their beer sections with craft beer from Oregon, Washington, bay area, and down south. We got 3 really good breweries in town and 2 just an hour out. I got a spot I go to to buy beer where the owners stay closed Monday and they travel around CA grabbing beers you never hear of. I'm gonna trip down to san Diego soon because I'm a huge fan of most of the brew spots down there. Mikkeller brewing, Coronado, Brouwerij west brewing, black plague are just a few of my favorites from down there.

If you happen to be a millionaire or become one there is always beer mailing services like Tavour. Costs too damn much for folks like me though lol. You might have luck finding a place that will order things for you in town. Got a few places like that here

Fremont Brewing Company, Deschutes, and Alesmith are all west coast breweries. and that's just getting started. at its heights, west coast beer is pretty great. But i can see why you might feel disgust for it, because all people have the taste for in these trendy west coast cities is stupid IPAs

Dunno about other states but Washington has a lot of good beer the only problem is you have to dig through a mountain of shitty craft IPAs to find them. Don't know what the hell happened but within the last few years IPAs just fucking took over this state overnight and now it's all you'll ever find. Drives me insane, I like IPAs but they're not the only thing I wanna drink.

It's the opposite here in California. IPA was ubiquitous for a long time and start up breweries exploded a few years ago to the point where it just got out of hand and a bunch closed because the market was flooded. Now every single brewery and their grandma is putting out stupid NE style IPAs, which is a trend I hope will soon die.
