A lot of kids have parents that are working when they would need to take the kids to school, and some schools are magnet schools where some kids might live like 40 miles away. So those kids might get on the bus at like 4 AM. Also for some reason the schools with IB programs are frequently in the bad neighborhood where the kids would probably get mugged if they walked to school. Mine was like that. The school was once all black before desegregation, but they didn't let any black kids into the IB program until 2002.

No because americans don't get plates or metal forks. Everything's plastic.
American schools literally eat prison food, the same companies who provide prisons with food also provide schools with food.
A typical meal at school would be
>Small burger with stale buns, a "side" of fries (unsalted and you'd only get like 7), a fruit or fruit cup that has been brining in nasty syrupy slop for hours
>Chicken patty, a side of green beans, fruit/fruitcup
>Small pizza, a side of corn, fruit/fruitcup
>Two cheesesticks, broccoli w/ cheese, fruit/fruitcup
Portion sizes were always small like they were feeding elementary kids. People would regularly buy two meals to feel full. People would also regularly throw away their sides/fruit because they were usually shitty and old or bruised or just nasty. Some would buy lunch but wouldn't eat it. You were forced to go through the lunch line, period. You couldn't go to lunch and just sit down, you HAD to go through the line. Even if you didn't have money, you would go through the line, get all your food, punch in your number, then they'd say "lol no money no food" and take your tray and throw away all the food. Then you sat down and didn't eat, or you'd get the "poor kid" lunch which was a pack of cheese and crackers and an apple.
>hur dur u live in poor neighborhood
I lived in the best school district in the state, they remodeled the entire cafeteria because they had a giant surplus (from buying shit food) and they were forced to spend the surplus or have funds cut. They were fucking greedy assholes. They wouldn't buy kids good food, and they wouldn't give poor kids a decent lunch either. They threw away maybe 40% of their cooked food on a daily basis.
We had a big problem where students would sneak out across the street to Taco Bell to get food to the point that the principal himself would go to Taco Bell every day to give kids detention if they came inside.

Not allowed in some schools either, same at mine. It used to be "no peanuts, fish, gluten, etc." but they just flat out banned bringing in lunch from home. They said it was so poor kids didn't feel like the rich kids were eating better or some fucking bullshit. I'm pretty sure schools get kickbacks for "feeding" kids so they force everyone to go through the line, even if they just throw away the food the state still sees that they went through the line so they technically "ate" so the school gets money.

I'm a middle school teacher, and lunch is, for the most part, similar to how it was when I was a kid. So, trash pizza, rubbery burgers, chicken patties, hot dogs, underripe produce, mealy apples, syrupy canned fruit, etc.

There's more effort put into providing a balanced diet, and including "healthier" foods; i.e. low fats, low sugar, low sodium, whole grains, etc. There's also less junk food items available for purchase a la carte. For example i could get a pack of mini donuts or fritos or snapple back in the day, but now its gay shit like "baked lays" and low sugar sports drinks or whatever.

50% of the time the food sucks, 30% of the time its acceptable, and 20% of the time it's pretty good. My standards for "acceptable" aren't very stringent.
I have a couple of fave dishes, which are served once a month, usually on the same day - "beefy nachos" which is just ground beef taco meat poured over refried beans and they give you a bag of tostitos scoops.
and "orange chicken" which is the same level of frozen orange chicken you'd get at a grocery store.
In my school you can take as much fruits and vegetables as you want, which is a great way to fill up. Sometimes they serve the teachers double entrees, but it depends if the particular kitchen staff spoon operator is clued in, which usually they aren't.

anyway, i've had a fun summer of jerkin' my dick and shitposting, but i've got to be back at work on monday, and the kids come flooding in a week after that.

Estonian poster here, just wanted to share some pics of average lunches here (stolen from some kid's instagram who shares his school lunch daily). Here are some that felt worth sharing to me:

1. Schnitzel and rice. This is more of a rare treat in schools and foreign, definitely not an every week sort of thing.
2. Pelmeni soup and kissel with a cake in it. I don't really know why Estonians put the cake in the kissel, but... they do.
3. Pork, fried sauerkraut and potatoes. Very basic and traditional Estonian meal.
4. Milk-macaroni soup and a kissell with whipped cream. They also do savory milk soup with rice, it's... an acquired taste. We also have dessert type of milk soups, though.
5. Good old borscht (why this heathen didn't put in sour cream is beyond me), bread and mannavaht, dessert porridge soup with milk, I think. It could also be leivasupp, a dessert soup made with leftover bread, sugar, milk and such. Buuut I think this is mannavaht.
6. Mashed potatoes, tasty sausages, fresh cabbage. Very basic but I can tell you those sausages are genuinely very tasty and good quality. Or at least my child self remembers them as so.
7. Buckwheat with mushroom sauce and grated carrots, again, very basic and traditional food.
8. Mixed soup with cereal as a dessert. I just brought this up for the cereal, because I don't think Nordic countries do cereal for lunch dessert? It's a weird tradition. Other common school desserts include: kohukene, a sweet and cold snack made from quark and usually includes some type of berry or chocolate filling. Also sweet quark and yogurt products and sweet jello.

Friday's were fried chicken day. A single piece of fried chicken (which was cheap for sure) and some of those weird accordion fries. They only sold it in limited amounts but the chicken was so popular they limited it to 1 per kid because kids were buying the $2 chicken special for $5.

The rest of it was trash. a Plain questionable meat chicken sandwhich or cheeseburger. "Nachos" that had inedible refried beans on top that still had ice in in the core because the chefs were so bad. Pizza was trash but still better than a lot of the stuff.

Only choises were milk, chocolate milk, and applejuice. Only maybe 5 times in my k-8th career did they have strawberry milk. Those were special days. They had oranges and apples that you could have as many as wanted. Days where I couldnt afford to eat I'd just have a couple apples.

They had a couple vending machines in middle school that had gatorade and vitamin water. I got unlucky and had just gotten into school when they banned candy/soda vending machines in public schools.

5/10. Would love just sit at a table and eat lunch casually with my friends again.

Though I don't live in America anymore I remember lunch from the country in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Not sure if it's any different or still the same, others comment if they've experienced similar things.

Breakfast used to be free, and they had pancakes and sausages. Portions would be about 2 decent sized pancakes and syrup. Sausage would depend if the child wanted it or not, the meat in the wiener was actually pretty good. I have heard that the quality of the sausage declined in later years.

Lunch would be a variety of things, Pizza was something like a pseudo deep dish and it was astonishingly good. The size was great, as well as ingredients. We got pepperoni and everything, circle pizzas were thick and when you at it you felt full.

A choice was something like a flatbread pizza, as this later replaced the circle pizza and the flatbread wasn't that good. Heard it was cost effective, but the taste wasn't the same.

Chicken and gravy or some sort of sauce was another choice, side dish were usually vegetables. Personally I never liked it, rarely ate it so I don't have too much memories of it. Chicken pieces were small but 3-4 pieces were given, later amounts just had 2 pieces.

Hamburgers were also good, patty size were decent as kids used to ask others for their patties if they didn't want it to make a double hamburger. Cheese and pickles used to be options, but later lunches just had ketchup or mustard.

What do others think?

That warm sweet milk and soggy macaroni mouth feel. Based.

On the other hand, we have barley porridge. Slimy adhesive like consistency but with the kernels still semi hard.

Me and two dirty Mexicans could churn out better and healthier food than the retarded lunch ladies and the faggot administrators who hire them. They probably make $20/hr cause of unions, all 20 of them, might as well hire a chef and some cooks if they're being paid to fucking microwave garbage.
