Ecosystems would definitely recover. Humans currently are incapable of creating any sort of real mass extinction event on par with the Permian–Triassic extinction events, and even those only wiped out 90% of life. I wouldn't mind eating less meat if it's good for the environment, but I sure as hell ain't gunna give up meat so that other people can eat more of it. I also think people should be able to have an avacado once in a while, but some people will buy 2 or 3 a week when they live in Vancouver or somewhere that avacados aren't meant to be. Eating local and lots of in season vegetables is what I try to do, but mostly because it's interesting trying to come up with new ways of cooking them. However I can see how it might be more difficult for people who don't cook.
