I'm 30. I've always had to pay for lunches (well my parents). There was free lunches for poor kids, but they got the same lunch, they just never got extras. They even got free breakfast. I didn't go to a private school, I didn't even go to a rich school. I remember I got money from my mom and I had to put it into my "account". Mind you this is years ago. I also remember in grade school we had an A lunch and a B lunch. It was pretty fucking well rounded. You could choose between the two. In high school it was more young adult oriented. We paid, but poor kids got fed anyway.

In Argentina, schools don't have in-house lunches, instead they partner with government approved "comedores" where they usually serve hundred to thousands of kids some high calorie meal like stews, rice, beans or pasta plus an apple or something for lunch; and mate cocido w/milk, and some butterbread for breakfast/merienda. That way schools aren't responsible of their menu. Also most schools work from early morning till ~midday and early afternoon till early evening so most kids aren't at school during lunchtime.

Damn I hated lunch at my school. From 1998- 2002 all they had was a "Green stuff" aka Rabbit Food line, a Cheeseburger/pizza/fry line but the burgers were "Soy based" and nasty as hell. The pizza was ok, but sometimes they burnt the crust. Last but not least they also had a Chicken sandwich and Fry combo that was decent. I survived all 4 years on pizza and chicken + fries. Also had Fruitopia drinks that were damn good. By contrast, the breakfast items were actually good, you know tasted like they were supposed to.

We need to radically overhaul our Public Education system.
Public Education System is a early-mid 20th century invention that was designed by cronyism to train a generation of obedient factory workers. It was then hijacked at multiple points all with the same idea- train a new generation of slaves to fit the designs of the overlords.

We have the resources to fix this! Retirement should be socially understood as the "Elder-mentor" phase of life, where a person with a lifetime of work experience educates and looks after 4 kids. Part of this process should be the Retiree-Mentor organizing the cooking of meals with the children on the food budget provided directly from the parents for their own children.

In the mean time, ALL of these parents NEED to be made aware of the typical school lunch inadequacies and to ensure their *own kids get fed properly* by preparing bag lunches for their kids.

In elementary school, lunch was that classic "A meal B meal option" that both cost the same. Parents would put transfer money into an "account" so the kids weren't handling any money directly, and so a parent who wanted to provide meals for their kids themselves weren't charged. The lunch itself was done by a school lunch organization that may have operated something like a non-profit and was independent of the school itself, but was selected by the school board. So it was all an agreement to provide for the kids good food and good nutrition at good cost, which isn't that hard because kids aren't picky eaters. The lunch period itself had teachers share the same eating space as their class for purposes of supervision, security, etc. If a parent (and more often, teacher) needed to make a complaint, they carried quite a lot of force.

In highschool "lunch" was a period where you were allowed to virtually do whatever. Food was paid for in the cafeteria directly (so parents would provide an allowance to their teenager for lunch), or the highschooler might have access to some other kind of food- something from home, or whatever(ie. teenagers would sneak off for local fast food). The cafeteria had a repeating menu that cycled every two weeks, with a variety of options every day, so pizza, hamburgers, hotdogs, sandwiches, soda, milk, etc.
