Did old school fast food actually have an ounce of quality and customer care, or is it just boomer nostalgia?

Yes it was the same as food you would get at a drive in. But you parked your car and walked inside

There was once a time when they were considered actual restaurants as opposed to borderline health hazard feeding troughs for the obese to claw their way into among screaming autistic children and spics throwing the cash register on the floor.

Boomer here. It was not good. Trash people went to places like that when I was a kid growing up in the 70s.

The reason some people are nostalgic for it, I imagine, is that in those times, food options were more limited, even outside of the food deserts that most of you fast food addicts live in. To someone who fears food and fears change and is intellectually a racist flyover shit head (whether they live near water or not), the idea that one could eat trash like McDonalds "back in the good old days" and not be judged as harshly as they're judged for it today seems wonderful and worth bringing back to Make America Great Again. Basically they are butthurt because their local supermarket now carries more than 2 varieties of apples and also scary memefoods like the newfangled sundried tomatoes and olive oil and avocados and blue corn tortilla chips, it confused them, someone made them feel stupid (perhaps the cashier), and they feel persecuted and in need of a "safe space". Or perhaps something similar happened with a sushi restaurant and the chop-sticks, or a mexican joint where a waiter said a word in spanish, and they felt threatened.

And that's what inspires these feelings of love for McDonalds, the world's most popular shitty fast food chain. It's a judgment-free zone. The Planet Fitness of food establishments.

I'm old enough to remember Burger Chef. They had these HUGE plastic kids meals, the whole top popped off and the bottom was a tray for your food. They had race cars and even boats.

Taco Bell started sucking in the late 90s. It used to be good before Yum bought them out.

This. Taco Bell was legit good and I remeber Burger King being not bad but the second is just youthful nostalgia probably. Taco Bell definitely used to be better quality though. Responsible adults even ate it.

Gen X here. If anything, fast food sucked more in the 80's than it does now. I think it's nostalgia. It's still generally shitty food like it used to be though.

And to add to this, I simply didn't notice whether or not restaurant workers were stupid or rude when I was a kid. Kids didn't used to have to be aware of that. Now they're forced to be aware of that kind of thing. Social media and everybody trying to be special is cancerous to children, imo.
