No, literally being an alcholic is not fun. That is a serious addiction.
I am just like you're friend however. I choose to drink everyday, had a beer in my hand right before typing this, and when I don't drink I don't get the shakes, or depressed.
A little bit of a buzz at all times is akin to why stoners smoke pot. Killing boredom, and making mundane things feel more fun than they would be.
Eventually everyone drinks too much when socializing, if someone can't stop themselves in this sense, that is a different form of alcoholism.

It's great for a few years until the physical and mental toll kicks in. What your friend isn't showing you is
•vomiting and spraying the toilet with viscous sludge the morning after
•30 minute showers where you sit on the floor of the tub because you're too weak to stand
•lying in bed all day with a racing heart and poinding head repeating "why did I do this again, I hate myself, what the fuck is wrong with me, I'm such a piece of shit"
•weight gain from drinking and eating a lot when drunk
•weight loss from drinking but not having an appetite because your guts are fucked from alcohol
•dental problems from not brushing due to constantly being drunk
•unexplained injuries
•anxiety and depression following binges
