on a broader note, an operation harms your body, if a doctor cuts out your enflamed appendix he stops it from becoming worse by harming your body. the surgeon stiches you up afterwards, but it's your body that does the proper healing, and its the same with medicines you take; a toxin is sometimes needed for things to heal.
as for the idiots in this thread saying "well, kerosine and tar isn't good for you", well, guess what? we use derivatives of the shit people used to take, baecause we found out that, why, and how it works.

Treatments are a complex science but using thorough and varying analysis & testing, eventually you would be able to piece together which compound will have a certain desired effect on any ailment.
Most "modern" medicines of the 19th & 20th century are derivatives of the petroleum industry, Bayer for example with the way they developed Aspirin and many other things - oil & petroleum is still a major market influencer today
