American with a british in-law who has spent a lot of time in the UK here.

I personally love vinegary, pickled flavors and hearty meals, so a lot of British foods appeal to me, but even in general it really gets an undeservedly bad rep. Branston with a very sharp cheddar on crackers is delicious. So is Piccalilli. Not a fan of Marmite.

As far as snacks go, pickled onion monster munch is the GOAT, (space raiders suck), and there's too many good British sweets to even list.

Sunday roasts are delicious, yorkshire pudding, cornish pastys, fish and chips, bangers and mash, full english breakfasts (hold the blood pudding), welsh rarebit, haggis, scotch eggs, and so on. I'm not saying this is all world class stuff, but they're always hearty, filling, unpretentious, and comforting meals, and I respect that.

It's better these days, but I think to some extent, seafood cookery was wiped off the map during wwii. The majority of the fishing fleet was taken for navy use, the local waters were full of enemy subs anyway, and a lot of fishing towns never recovered. Atlantic fish like cod was more accessible for unrationed fish and chips, but otherwise the main seafood that remained available was shoreline stuff like cockles and river fish.

A war that ended seventy years ago isn't much excuse, even if the economy remained fucked for a few decades after, but I reckon it was that generational loss of knowledge that affected trends for a lot longer. Cured fish is still fairly popular, kippers and rollmops, smoked salmon and haddock, but in terms of native dishes most of it isn't much more developed than x item cooked until it's done. That said a pot of clams and a pint of ale is fucking good.

Does all black pudding have oats in it and if so, does it affect the texture? I've only ever had boudin which is just blood, fat, onion and spices. Blood sausage is supposed to be creamy, it seems like oats would fuck with that.
