There are fewer regulations in the EU about this kind of thing. So they can just say "tomatoes" without any indication as to what kind of tomatoes they are. Or they can say "sugar" without mentioning where that sugar came from or how refined it is.
Plus, there are some ingredients they aren't required to list at all.

At least the label on the left is closer to being honest.

Do we have a fucking choice? There is probably some organic, fair trade, dolphin safe, black lives matter, sustainable and responsible choice at the hippie store for six times the price with a short shelf life that tastes bad. But fuck that, ketchup is crap anyway.
Sugar is protected by tariffs and corn syrup is fucking cheap, companies only want profits, so they formulate shit that will sell and rake in the cash, they dont give a shit about us.

that's why I usually make my own ketchup from tomatoes in my garden. When I do buy it I get the "simply heinz" version which has fewer ingredients than the UK one does.

What's wrong with comparing two products and buying whichever one you think tastes the best?

I often buy organic produce--not because it says "organic" on it, but because I compared the organic and the non-organic and the organic was fresher. sometimes the organic is best, sometimes it's not. Judging by the label is fucking stupid either way, judge the product itself and ignore what the label says.

Many times the product isn't identical. that's the point. If the conventional tomatoes smell like nothing and are half-rotten while meanwhile the organic ones are nice and fresh why wouldn't you buy the organic ones? (of course, the opposite is often true too).

>Can you escape it without paying a fortune?
Easily. It sounds scary to say that sugar is 3x the cost of the global market, but it's still very cheap.

The only things that HFCS infiltrates are low-end processed foods which I don't buy anyway. Nicer brands of products use real sugar, as does any competent home cook.

>> Like are there products that ignore that in high dosage health problematic stuff in favour of normal sugar that you don't have to pay double for?
Yes. They are slightly more expensive than the cheapo brands but not by much. HFCS is only an issue if you buy low-end processed food. To continue OP's example, Heinz Ketchup made without HFCS is on the shelf right next to the normal one. At my local supermarket the prices are $2.78 for a 32 oz bottle of standard Heinz ketchup, or $3.46 for the same size bottle of "Simply Heinz", which is both organic and has no HFCS.
