You have to wait until they're almost rotten to eat them IMO. Even slightly underripe makes it feel like eating sand, but if you wait until they're soft and mushy it's okay. There are also other varieties you could try that might not be as gritty.

This, I used to live in lake county California to grow weed with my father. Huge shithole but I’ll be damned if I didn’t go down to the local pear farm everytime they came in season and buy crates of the fuckers. Not sandy at all, so juicy you would take a bite and that shit would run down your face. Still to this day the best fruit I’ve ever had in my life. I would eat about five a day.
