I was eating some sardines straight out of the tin and I found myself biting on this stringy thing!

Is it a tapeworm?! Please help me I'm freaking out and not sure if I ingested anything.

If they're in a tin they're cooked right? Does that kill the eggs?

Sorry. Seafood is good for you and you should be fine if it's cooked. I can't find anything specifically on the tin that says "cooked" or not.

I think it's mostly a psychological thing I'm grossed out by it had a pic related reaction to biting on a tapeworm. (That is a tapeworm, right?)

The pic you posted looks like it has protrusions, whereas worms are smooth and segmented. Protrusions would make sense if it's connective, but I'm not an expert in parasites nor fish anatomy, can only share that I've noticed them before and assumed them to be normal. From googling worms in sardines it seems the parasites are typically much smaller. And in any case, they'd be killed by cooking.

I am eating sardines and I find myself biting this white, stringy, soft, segmented thing. I'm not a parasitologist so I kind of freaked out and thought it was a tapeworm.

Now I realize it's probably some connective tissue and the segments are probably matching the spinal discs which they were attached to. Now I know.

Fish carry many types of potential parasites and the eggs can last years despite being heated and canned.

It's hard to tell whether it's segmented or striated.

If you soak it in a little water to "rehydrate" it, does it become slippery and frail, or does it become rubbery? Can you cut it and give us a view of the cross section?

It frankly doesn't look like a tapeworm nor a spinal cord.
