In my town, there's just more billboards for them.

There's a Subway, McDonalds, Burgerking, and Pizza Hut, oh and a Dairy Queen. Pizza Hut and Dairy Queen are constantly on the verge of shutting down, with Pizza Hut not being able to hire managers. Oh and there's a Taco Bell with no staff because they've abused staff for so long no one will work there.

However, downtown there's 3 independent Chinese places 2 cafes, 2 family restaurants, 1 vintage themed restaurant at the railway station, 2 pubs that are more restaurant than bar, etc.

>is this true?
It depends on where you are in the country.

If you're in New York City, for example, you're more likely to find a small, independent restaurant than a nationally known chain. (Not including things like McDonalds and Starbucks)

But when you're driving across the vastness of the US, you'll find common chains (Applebees, Chilis, TGIFridays, etc) along the highways since travelers prefer mediocre, predictable food. At a Chilis, you always know what you're getting and, after driving nine hours, you're not in the mood for a surprise.

But even in those areas, once you get off the highway and get into the towns, you find local places again.

Outside of North American produced food it's actually not in that common, because we don't have the massive import taxes on sugar and massive subsidies of corn production that make it cheaper to use HFCS in food production.

But, if it is present in the UK you may see it labelled as Glucose-Fructose Syrup, or Fructose-Glucose Syrup. Or possibly isoglucose. Never as sugar

>> No.12434281

>>12434218
>On September 14, 2010, The Corn Refiners Association applied for permission to use the name "corn sugar" in place of high fructose corn syrup on food labels for products sold in the United States. According to a press release, "Consumers need to know what is in their foods and where their foods come from and we want to be clear with them," said CRA president Audrae Erickson. "The term 'corn sugar' succinctly and accurately describes what this natural ingredient is and where it comes from – corn."

>TIME stated that the CRA's decision to change the name of HFCS was because HFCS had such a bad reputation.[11] In response to the proposed name change, The New York Times ran an article asking nutrition experts what they would suggest as appropriate names for HFCS. Three of the five experts recommended alternate names, including Michael Pollan who suggested "enzymatically altered corn glucose". Dr Andrew Weil recommended not changing from HFCS, calling the term Corn sugar "too vague" and the CRA's attempt to change HFCS's name "Orwellian". However Dr Barry Popkin felt that "corn sugar" was an appropriate term.[12][13]

>On May 31, 2012, the Food and Drug Administration ultimately rejected the name change.[14]

Well, yes, and no. Or rather, no, and yes. You see the thing is, it's stupid easy to find a non-chain restaurant basically anywhere in America. But there's no real advantage to it, because there's a 95% chance they get all their product from a mass distributor like Sysco or Roma, and the ingredients are just as prepackaged and processed as anything you'd get at a chain restaurant.

It's best not to point that out, this scares and angers the American. The realization that their favorite local pizzeria is just as soulless and premade as Domino's, and serves a product identical to 10,000 other restaurants, sends them into a frenzy, even though they know damn well they never have or never will see the proprietor of their bespoke pizzeria loading a bunch of pallets of fresh tomatoes in the bed of his truck at the farmer's market, or stocking up on cheese and meat at the butchers. They can't accept that their beloved hole-in-the-wall Chinese place is not better than PF Chang's, and their favorite Mexican place is not demonstrably better than Chipotle/Qdoba's in any way.

That and your average American doesn't have any tastebuds except for "sweet" due to drinking coke since they were 5 years old. the government subsidized corn to help the farmers recover from the dust bowl. Because they put no cap on it farmers started taking out massive laons and buying more land to get more profit from production on scale. This created farmers that had insane debts but also insane turnover to pay off those debts working farms that are absolutely massive. As a result the amount of corn produced was far more than anyone could handle and they started putting it in everything, HFCS was a great way to turn the massive amounts of corn into something that could be put into anything. Meanwhile the government cannot stop it since pulling the plug on subsidies kills the farmer's income and makes them drown in debt. Farmers defaulting would kill all the banks that extended those massive loans. So in the end the governemnt is subsidizing something they dont want just to keep the wheels turning

lobbies, loans that take a while to pay off meaning its hard to find a sweetspot where you reduce the subsidies while also not slowly strangling the farmer, midwest not being as interesting as the coasts, representatives from the farming states promising they will protect the farmers from the government, meaning they will trade some other policy in return for continuation of the subsidies, and then saying they did great in washington, the good industry being reliant on the fact that cheap corn comes in constantly, again lobbying for it.

Basically doing it right will take a lot of concentration of the bureaucracy to do it good, without creating another problem and without leaving anyone out in the cold. There are other problems, the farmers will vote republican as allways (so republicans will protect them by keeping the money flowing and the democrats have no reason to try and reform, and if they try the next time republicans are in power they can revert it), and frankly its too small of a group. Politicians are higher class too so they dont interact with farmers, dont look at the farmlands at any detail, have no knowledge of farming, never buy cheap food stuffed with HFCS and get told by lobbies about other problems.

It's allowed but just about every real dairy product has this on it. I haven't really found any that don't, maybe like a Kraft singles wouldn't?

A lot of issues like this in America are solved at the consumer level, people object to something and products that comply to that objection appear at a higher price, then they become the standard and the objectionable product is no longer carried for lack of sales. I think a European is probably not used to seeing that sort of change take place without laws regulating the change but in the US it happens all the time. Most Americans are entirely aware our food regulatory agencies are mostly on the side of the manufacturers they regulate, people who care what they eat are expected to make the effort to study these agencies questionable decisions and food science generally. I know I'm kind of talking out of my ass but in America if you care about something you're expected to engage and contribute to producing change and generally that change is supposed to begin with yourself. There's all kinds of alternative stuff concerning food here in CA, there's a ton of anti-USDA journalism and watchdogs to engage with, there's a ton of organic farming going on, there's whole special grocery stores that carry only preservative-free hippie food that goes bad in the 3 days with as much local and organic sourcing as possible. Europeans constantly lampoon Americans as getting the short end of the stick but they're always looking at laws and regulations, not what Americans are actually doing.

How comes you kids don't believe in the free market's ability to solve problems? Why you love MEP dick in your mouth so much?

Brit here. I'm not surprised at all by HFCS - it isn't common at all in the UK, but that's probably because we don't grow corn over here, while America grows tons of it. That's why HFCS is such a cost-effective sweetener in the US.

>>12433132
This one is interesting. Note how the American one says "artificial flavours", while the British one says "natural flavours", "no artificial preservatives", and "100% whole grain".

I think British consumers are probably, in general, a bit more wary about artificial additives, and a bit more attracted to claims of "natural" ingredients. Obviously many Americans will be wary about these things too (look at the American debate over GM food), but there must be a reason why Quaker has decided to market their products differently here in Britain.

Not happening. Trump is disliked by nearly everybody in Britain (I don't mind him that much but he is disliked by most people) and there is no way that we would allow things like your disgusting chlorinated chicken to come over here. Chlorinated chicken has definitely struck a nerve with Brits - for us, it exemplifies the shitty US food standards that we won't accept. Take that rubbish and shove it up your arse.

>>12436282
Brit here, we call it ketchup, although come to think of it, I think I have heard my dad and possibly my grandma call it tomato sauce, so maybe that used to be the more common term here, and maybe that's why that term was taken over to Australia. I dunno.

The primary reason behind the differences in the US and UK oatmeal is that they're comparing the super-low cost instant oatmeal from the US line to a mid-range 3-minute oatmeal from the UK line. While the exact product isn't available in the US, Quaker produces several hot cereal products with comparable ingredient lists to the UK example in the pic. It's simply a disingenuous comparison.

I'm not American you cheeky bastard. Whoever is in charge of the UK post-brexit will have to make a trade deal. That's the whole point of brexit "hurr durr we mark own trade deal nao, take back control". Making a deal with the U.S., Britain will be in a position of utter weakness and America will ram it in up to the balls, no lube. And there week be plenty of brexit shills telling you that having U.S. chicken on the shelves in Tesco is a victory for the working man or some other lie.

Any deal with China is going to involve more visas for prc citizens do you can expect a lot more Chinese restaurants as well.

>> No.12448801

>>12448115
This is actually true sadly. I approve of brexit, but it does place the UK in an awkward position. US food will probably play a role, but I'd guess predominantly in terms of fast/processed food - as with most countries british meat tends to be pretty prominent (and we don't produce plenty) in supermarkets, and there really is a strong public sentiment against US meats, especially chlorine washed ones. So I'd imagine it'd sneak in in processed foods, but mostly not be relevant otherwise.

As for the chinese visas etc, this is true.

But on the plus side, we were never integrated into the euro, so as much as brexit is going to hurt, it's not going to hurt nearly as much as the euro crashing and burning will - they even share some similarities, namely short term pain, long term gain. Assuming the Eu either dissolves or faces radical changes in the near future too (not unlikely), then that would be beneficial for us.

Or hey, who knows our useless politicians could also just defy the public and keep us in the Eu, which would be annoying but would at least avoid most of the problems you mention, while still enabling us to be protected from euro collapse fallout.

Honestly, there are some downsides but I don't feel overly bad about the UK position.

>And there week be plenty of brexit shills telling you that having U.S. chicken on the shelves in Tesco is a victory for the working man or some other lie.

This part is true though, so many of the pro brexit crowd are unashamedly pro american. There are laudable aspects to america. They are, however, almost universally not what these cucks support. They just want big business shekels and/or muh hollywood crap, depending on if they're businesses or white trash. Sad desu

And please don't bother trying to claim they're all magical special lineages, most of your farm animal lineages especially beef are british ones.

>british people are really stupid though from what i've seen. like if they don't live in london the iq is automatically 30 points lower and if they do live in london they're probably an immigrant

Funny, that's exactly what people say about americans outside of regions like jew york and californian big cities. In reality the UK has an average of 100, with the US having an average of 98. Now, I will actually throw you a bone and point out white americans IQ is actually marginally higher than white british peoples - about 102-3 vs 101. This likely stems from being a undeveloped country more recently (homesteading, pioneers) - having more selective pressure led to a slight eugenic effect.

On the other hand, intelligence is both genetic (aka IQ), and cultural (educational systems). And fuck me is americas education system tragic. Furthermore, your university education is basically radical brainwashing 101 (because everyone knows engineering grads need to take courses on white privelige amirite), and your media is sensationalist bullshit, from news to documentaries to reality tv shows. See >>12433500

Your entire culture is fucked, top to bottom. Your conservatives and country bumpkins appear to regard facts as some kind of liberal ploy to eat their brains, and your liberals are, without a single shadow of a doubt, the most cancerous progressive bullshit pricks in existence, who ALSO appear to regard facts and data as some kind of evil racist nazi plot to steal their brains.

Are ours also bad? Sure. But nowhere near as bad.

Yes, I'm hopeful we can make decent steps towards restoring some of the old commonwealth trade deals we abandoned when we entered the EU. Australia as you say has substantial agriculture and would love to reduce chinese reliance - the same is also true of new zealand. Canada slightly less so, but even there similar concepts apply. Australia could also be hellishly useful if our politicians grow a brain and get some more nuclear power plants. It's not like huge earthquakes and tsunamis are a big worry here, and Australia could be a good source of uranium.
