Whiskey thread.

Tried this finally based on several recommendations from several threads here. It's surprisingly good considering the price ($17.09 after tax where I live), and almost as good as George Dickel No. 12, my current favorite ($26.74 after tax). If it just had a little more sweetness, it would probably be perfect.

Yesterday, a guy at a liquor store that's part of a small local chain (Luekens WIne & Spirits) suggested following their Facebook page, as they post whenever they get any Buffalo Trace stuff. I checked their feed and they seem to get a case at least once a month. My local Total Wine Store, using the same method, seems to get a case every couple of months. That appears to be the best way of finding BT stuff it seems, unless you're best friends with a liquor store clerk.

Drinks are so heavily taxed where I am that stuff costs double or more compared to elsewhere, this makes developing favoured tastes hard. I even have a relative coming down from the UK that could bring me down shit but I have no idea what I would get them to bring down.

Where are you all that those are hard to get? Is it a weird state controlled liquor store thing?

ER and Trace are some of the most common ones to see around here. Trace more than eagle rare but can walk to 3 grocery stores and they will have a shelf full

I didn't care much for EW black label at all. Smells like lighter fluid and feels exactly like what you would expect for the cheap price. EW white label makes you feel like you're stealing and getting away with it.

American laws regarding whisky suck compared even to Canada and the UK which at least have 3 year aging requirements for anything called whisky while in America you can throw something into a barrel for 1 second and dump it right back out and call it whiskey when it’s basically new make spirit. If it's less than 4 years old, they have to state it. Harmless Coloring/Flavoring/Blending Materials such as E150A are not allowed in straight whiskey, unlike Scotch and Canadian. No clue about Japanese, but I assume they're similar to those two.

I don't think I've had that one.
I got a Talisker Storm for Christmas last year and I really enjoyed that.
I mostly only buy Laphroaig 10 yo or Quarter Cask or Caol Ila for sipping, but I'd pick up a bottle of Storm again if I found it at a favourable price.

I do really enjoy Laphroaig 10 as well, what is the difference between the 10 and the quarter cask though?

Most requested Whiskey/Bourbon that I have people ask for is Blantons. Its about 67 dollars at our store after tax and personally I don't get the hype. I got people who ask about it on a weekly basis because we only get max 4 bottles every 2 months about. Seems to me Buffalo Trace is the best bang for your buck based on real Whiskey drinker recommendations.

Honestly I have no clue. Only thing I can say maybe try is the High West Campfire. Its a blend of Rye Scotch and Bourbon and my manager says its the best most underrated Whiskey we sell. Sells for about $69 here. Sorry I can't be more help despite selling a ton of different whiksey at my store the clientelle sticks to bottom shelf swill fireball, jim and Jack, so I don't get many people giving me details about new stuff or obscure stuff in the inventory.

GD 8, GD 12, and their high-end Barrel Select are the same whisky, just at different ages. GD 8 is ~6 years, GD 12 is ~8 years, and GD BS is 10 years. Given that there is only a three-dollar price difference between 8 and 12, everything I've heard from people IRL and online is that GD 8 is entirely skippable and to just stick with GD 12. It's actually a very strange price scheme, almost like they made a mistake (in our favor). Observe:

Latest mail order haul: Ardbeg Corryvreckan, Aberlour A'bunadh, Drambuie

Already had the A'bunadh. It is a favorite because it is such an intensely flavored sherry bomb.

Corryvreckan: The heavy peat is balanced well with pineapple, citrus peel, dark chocolate and raspberries. Fucking shit this is good. Super light color.

Drambuie: 40% ABV, so more like a whisky than a liqueur in terms of proof. Quite sweet with a honey-like mouthfeel, but the honey flavor is balanced well by an almost but not quite anise/licorice like medicinal note coming from the herbs and spices. Quite lovely. I recommend this if you want to feel like a British prince. I look forward to making some rusty nails with this.

On 4th of July I purchased some Laphroaig 10 year to open my Scotch horizons. It was only $30 at my total wine and more. The moment I opened the bottle, model T factory rubber tires filled my nose and so did burning rubber/campfire mixed with seaweed. I think I found a new love. I've been drinking Evan Williams white and black label, Jim Beam, many other Bourbons and only monkey shoulder as my first scotch. I can't wait to start diving more into Ardbeg and other Islay Scotches. Best $30 I've ever spent on whiskey.

I've never bought a Japanese whiskey because they always seem overpriced and tend to get mixed reviews, but my grocery store was having a weird liquor sale and this one bottle of Suntory was pretty much the only bottle they still had that was 50% off. When I got home I checked other stores and the "original" price was definitely marked up quite a bit, but it was still the cheapest. It's okay, but I would have regretted it if I'd payed over $30 USD.

Also different mash bills. Well, scotch only has one mash bill for single malt, and one for grains (I think). Bourbon is very similar (and singular) to scotch grain whisky. Only scotch grain whisky tastes nice when it's bottled at 35-40 years of age give or take.

Made a rusty nail with Johnnie Walker Double Black and Drambuie, with the traditional two parts scotch to one part Drambuie ratio. Too sweet, and missing something. Added just a teeny tiny splash of Laphroaig 10. Fucking perfectly balanced.
tl;dr: A traditional rusty nail made with Drambuie and blended scotch is way better with just a splash of high peat level scotch added.

It's most definitely a meme, given that it's made by Brown-Forman, which ensures you'll find it everywhere and in any size bottle you want (they even have the tiny kid size 50 mL bottles for it). Also, it's the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby and it's made in one of the three Kentucky Distilleries that are National Historic Landmarks (the other two make Maker's Mark and Buffalo Trace).

Tastewise, it's alright...like a more elaborate version of Maker's Mark. Lot's of in-your-face flavors + not heavy on spice. Also, if you try it after it's in the freezer, the finish is very strong on vanilla, almost like you just had a spoonful of sugar cookie dough. I probably wouldn't buy it again, though, just because of the $33 price tag. There are so many other acceptable bourbons out there (some better even) that are cheaper.
