Americans literally just don't understand.
It's a major hassle to ship goods past the border for no reason, so we only get big brand name shit. Anything slightly obscure just doesn't even bother. Considering we have the population of a large state but take up more space it's hard to find anyplace to direct sales.

We have very few chains, but they look indistinguishable from American chains. the one that focused on marketing itself as THE Canadian brand was Tim Hortons. It started in the boomer era when quality meant fuck all because that generation ate out of cans and just boiled everything.

It's about as Canadian as McDonald's is American. Nobody is claiming it's a cultural icon and nobody is saying it's great, but it's a recognizable brand and not having it wouldn't be the same.

Tim Hortons sucks now for many reasons. But I'm just answering why Canadians give a shit about Tim Hortons at all. The truth is, most people don't even bother anymore.

Canada sort of had its cultural identity drained away ever since Multiculturalism became the official policy. In its place we just get shitty vague symbols like Tims, hockey and the other shallow crap anybody who's never lived here could tell you about Canada.
