To add to this, I noticed they sell skyline chili in a can at the grocery store. They want about $5 a can though. It's not worth it, is it?

I've started frying up my dogs rather than just boiling them as I used to; I can't believe I didn't do this earlier. I also like to sweat off some onions in the same pan.

OP, Here's a Colombian for ya. Miami has a slew of delicious sources of overdressed various latino dogs that are phenomonal balances of sweet, smoky, crunchy, soft, herbal and hot.
Totally could mock this up at home, but the one you can't is the Icelandic dog, which has a hint of lamb in the beef link, sooooo good. But, you can in fact buy the French fried shallot vs onions now for the crunchy topping.

I hear they deep fry the hot dog in Michigan for a superior snap of the casing. Can anyone from the area give a run down of how this method compares to grilling or steaming?

Coleslaw is awesome on a dog
So is mayonnaise and tapatio
BBQ beans and yellow mustard works
Mac n cheese with onion straws
Also try cooking your sauerkraut with beer, butter, and some raisins

My favorite is with chili, saurkraut, mustard, and chopped onions.

I put enough chili on that I need a fork to eat it.

deep fried hot dog is the best way to prepare it but Im not from Michigan. Like all hot dogs dont expect to enjoy more than 1 and a half of them but the crispiness is good.

As a counterpoint for the other responses, I'll add a vote for not needing oil or butter. Hot dogs are plenty fatty, if you throw them in a pan on medium and roll them in the pan you'll get them nice and brown.

Had a little fried food joint in the last city I rotated in. They had options for deep fried vs. steamed dogs and I totally went for the deep fried. Totally different experience, made the dog really crisp, but not over so. If I ever have the choice, I'd get deep fried every time.

I like to fry up the onions in the same pan for flavour and to not have so much to wash up, so the oil helps there.

Hot dogs are absolutely my favorite food.
At least once a week, I'll buy an 8 pack of dogs and buns and that will be my dinner. I keep trying different brands, but I cant decide whether I like the Nathan's bun Length Beef Franks or Ball Park Bun Length Beef Franks the best. Sometimes I'll do the 99 cent Bar-S dogs if I'm feeling strapped for money. They're awful as hot dogs, but kind of good in their own way.

Lately I've been grabbing a jar or tin of Tostitos/fritos cheese sauce and just dipping the dogs in that. It's a pretty great, guilty pleasure food of mine.

Of course, this is all cheap, easy weeknight dinner food. If I'm really craving a good hot dog, It needs a few things, soft bun, cream cheese, sriracha/jalapenos, and caramelized onions. You can do any dog really, because it's about the toppings, but if I'm doing a dog like this, I want a fat hot link sausage. Evergood Hot Links are my go-to. If you want a veggie-option, Field Roast is a phenomenal choice too. Any flavor. Again, i think the cream cheese, onion, sriracha combo is so strong that it doesn't matter which dog you use, it'll turn out good.

That said, I made some dogs recently, all beef, wrapped in thicc bacon, with caramelized onions and bell peppers with a cheese sauce. Put all that in a good, sturdy bun, and it was fucking life changing.
