Because they're garbage catfish raised in overcrowded ponds, fed antibiotics, ponds are reused over and over concentrating heavy metals. Just google it yourself to read the whole story, on most seafood grown overseas actually. Good healthy seafood ain't cheap, unfortunately.

Mostly because it comes from countries that people don't trust to keep up with safety standards. Could also be that farmed fish isn't always as flavorful or nutritious as wild-caught. I'm not sure why the USA doesn't farm as much fish though, maybe because of lobbying by fishermen or livestock farmers, but less people would probably have an issue with locally farmed stuff.
