Korean food sucks. The BBQ is subpar, the fried chicken tastes weird, and the side dishes just completely throw me off (cold radish soup wtf). I have another 10 days in Seoul. What am I gonna do?

The fried chicken is better than american fried chicken. Perfectly crispy chicken, with delicious sauces. Granted I've only eaten Korean fried chicken in Vietnam, but it was leagues above the kfc/popeyes bullshit you get in America. Nashville style can contend though.

I must say the the BBQ is vastly superior to what you find in American restaurants unless you're willing to pay triple.
The only difference in fried chicken is the Korean preference for boneless and occasionally you are blessed with kimchi instead of coleslaw in your burger.
Try every flavour of soju.

Korean food sucks because they usually don't season their food before cooking. You order Korean barbecue and it usually comes out unseasoned and is cooked unseasoned. They do marinade some meats in soy sauce, like bulgogi, but most of the meat is really, really fucking bland.

Meat in korea is generally shit. Their agriculture is kinda fucked. That being said, ox tail soup something worth trying.

If adventurous, pickled fish is something. Not my favourite but it was an experience.

Geodeungeo gi (grilled mackarel) was my favourite meal there.

I assume you're in Seoul. If you have no qualms about it, hop on the yellow line and visit Moran. Find the dankest, dirtiest restaurant on a side street and order steamed gaegoei. Wasnt my favourite meal but I can honestly say I aint tasted anything like it before.

Korean food is pretty good, but inferior to Japanese food. Such is the way of the world that said:

>korean bbq is fucking delicious and cheap in Kore
>some of your sides like mulmaraengumuchim are pretty delicious
>korean style hue is pretty good
>bone soup is good
>some of that street food blood sausage, and chopjae is pretty good
>gukbap is amazing for a hangover
>samgaetang is great

Plenty of great korean food anon. Also I was basically drunk or hungover for the entire 3 years I spent there. Incredibly unhealthy, but fun.

To be fair, most Korean food falls into the category of "soul food." Which means that it's eaten and enjoyed because of tradition, not taste. Judging from /ck/'s stance towards american soul food, it's no wonder why Korean food has a negative reputation here.

Ya they do, I grew up with Korean cuisine and I can 100% tell you that some of these foods are outright disgusting. Overrated sides and too smelly. It's definitely not for everyone

>What to eat
Check out foreign districts (like Itaewon) There are some high-end non-Korean restaurants in Gangnam. I know this sounds sketchy but department stores/malls have some quality food that are not "Korean". You should also check out their pastries, a lot of my foreign friends absolutely loved Korean pans. Or try the streetvendors

>> No.13216519

>>13216281
Discount retailers like Savezone have surprisingly good selection of street food-type vendors in their food court. There are surprisingly good restaurants, cafes, and bakeries all over Seoul even in less trendy areas like Guro and Eunpyeong. The best new bakery in Seoul (supposedly) is tucked away in a residential area a block north of Nowon Station. The place doesn't even have a proper sign but has a chalkboard with the word "bread" standing on the sidewalk.

Your picture of Galbi is marinated, and 5 times out of ten, any American our family has introduced it to has begged for the recipe. The other 5 times out of ten, they are just begging you to cook it again.

Get a large hydro flask. Every day when you get up, pour cold pic related into it. Get the “fresh” one, it’s less stinky, not that it matters over there. Walk through all kinds of hilly neighborhoods, visit temples, go to their gay coffee shops, but above all, get 65% drunk at 10am every single day and let the gods of randomness guide you.

I know your feel. Cheer up, drink up, and go get ‘em.

To elaborate, partially because I’m 65% drunk right now and want to elaborate, one thing I respect about Koreans is their respect for stoicism in general. You can pretty much just tie one on and go do anything. I’m 90% sure I could walk into a random office, nod to the admin, walk into a conference room, and drink undisturbed out of my flask. When I was there, apparently I wandered into a closed area of a temple that didn’t seemed marked off or anything and just relaxed there and enjoyed the art. A couple people came and went but apparently since I was quiet and stoic and just enjoying the art, no problem arose.

I had the most fun in the hilly neighborhoods. Seoul’s outskirts were designed to be confusing. There are probably hundreds of thousands of small businesses there and they’re all different. Wandering up to an American-styled brewpub where they didn’t understand how to open a tab, but did understand perfect garlic fries was interesting, and something I would never have encountered unless I was 60% drunk at 10am.

True, but a lot of Korean barbecue (like 생갈비) isn't marinated or seasoned at all, and comes off really bland. Most meat in Korea isn't seasoned before they start cooking it. And guests will compliment your food and ask for the recipe as a courtesy. I've asked for recipes I had no interest in ever cooking. It's called being polite. And I'm sure Americans love bland-ass food because their food is just as flavorless a lot of times.
